So, apparently I'm pregnant right now.

At least, according to the Department of Health and Human services new proposal, I can't prove I'm not.

According to the proposal, because there is some debate in some circles about when life begins (some believe that life begins at the fertilization of the egg, before implantation), clinics receiving federal funding have the right to withhold contraceptives to women who are seeking it.

I quote (with thanks to the Huffington Post): "Because the statutes that would be enforced through this regulation seek, in part, to protect individuals and institutions from suffering discrimination on the basis of conscience, the conscience of the individual or institution should be paramount in determining what constitutes abortion, within the bounds of reason."

And just who's definition of reason are they referring to? As they themselves have shown, reason itself is debatable.

In relation to the bit about abortion, I just posted this almost exact comment on another thread about consistency, but it's totally worth noting that the Catholic Church has been inconsistent throughout history as to when life begins/when the fetus is "ensouled"/when the fetus experiences "the quickening" to become fully human.

I think the most interesting is the Council of Trent in 1566, which decreed that no two souls can occupy a human body. Therefore, no fetus has a soul. Jesus was different in that his soul was attached to his body at the time of conception. Interesting stuff, this history.

It's ridiculous that anyone's body is just considered for its biological capabilities rather than the person who inhabits it.

Seriously. within MY bounds of reason, my health and what I choose to do with my body is my business, but my reason is worth less that those who actually think a zygote is worth more than a living breathing woman that dares to be sexually active.

okay, I feel better.

for real though, these are supposed medical professionals who are outright ignoring medical fact to push their morals on others and then are crying discrimination when they are told that no, you really can't control other people's choices, but thanks for playing!
