You can't make this stuff up ...

This story has been picked up by several blogs:

An Iowa blogger who claimed to use activism and education to promote “a more just and life-affirming culture of sexuality” for women, especially those women who have been victims of sexual violence, has pleaded guilty to photographing and filming a college student's breasts without her consent.

Kyle D. Payne, 22 of Ida Grove, presented his guilty plea Monday in Iowa District Court for Buena Vista County. He agreed he was guilty of felony attempted burglary in the second degree and two counts of invasion of privacy, a serious misdemeanor.

I guess to put a positive spin on this guy, one could say as a way of dealing with his urges he tries to compensate with advocacy on behalf of women victimized by sexual predators.  Then again, he could just be a jerk and a hypocrite.

He's young still, so maybe he will get some psychological help and end up being a decent guy after all.

Still it's a sad day for male feminists.

I couldn't comment on your blog before, david_orchid, so I posted a comment to you on the main Feministing blog. I'll repost it here:

So, [Ann,] you linked to a dude to discuss Kyle Payne? And not just a dude, but a dude who obviously doesn't care about the WOMAN Kyle Payne raped, only about how hard it's going to be for male feminists to be taken seriously now because of Kyle Payne? Yeah, that seems like the best way to go.

david_orchid, you seriously need to reassess your perspective on what the actions of Kyle Payne mean in the grand scheme of things. Yes, you may now have to prove yourself even more because you're a dude in a women's movement, but that pales nearly to invisibility in comparison to what the woman Kyle Payne assaulted has to face because of that asshole. Please check your male privilege and STFU if you can't. Criminy.

The line that really bothers me and should bother you enough to revise and add to this post is this: "Still it's a sad day for male feminists."

You know who it's actually a sad day for? The woman Kyle Payne assaulted and the hundreds of women he "counseled" during his stint as a rape victim advocate and the potentially dozens of other women he has harassed, assaulted, and/or raped. Get over yourself and write about something that matters instead of lamenting about how bad Kyle Payne makes you look as the poor put-upon dude who deigns to join the feminist movement. Either suck it up and do what's right, or join Kyle Payne in getting the fuck out of my movement.
