American Apparel

Hi there,

I was looking through a magazine that comes with one of the biggest selling English Sunday newspapers, when I found this article about Dov Charney, the founder of American Apparel. I have yet to pick my jaw up off the floor. The stomach-churning misogyny of this man is quite breathtaking. Follow this weblink to see the article - I know that I will be boycotting anything from this odious creep's stores!

what a disgusting, nasty pig. I've always hated American Apparel with passion.

that guy is such a hipster loser.

Bloody hell. At the very least he makes me embarrassed to be Canadian. Eugh.

I've been "boycotting" the store for years, as the few shirts I've owned with the American Apparel label have been poorly made and look terrible after only a few wearings. The more I read about his nasty attitude toward women, the more I hate the company.

But I need help convinving my friends of this. Most of them think the ads are "hot" and think I'm being over-sensitive and prude-ish when I tell them my complaints with the company. Any suggestions?

I don't even know what to say. The article itself seethed with cavalier misogyny--"pesky lawsuits"? It sounds like this guy thinks that good deeds cancel out heinous deeds--ie, fair labor practices equalizing blatant sexual harassment. How can we stop this? How can we change this? My boycott will hardly make a dent! What to do??

ElizabehtLeigh- phew- i thought I was imagining it! I felt the whole article glorified charney. Loved the closing paragraph:

"And isn’t it much worse to have your T-shirt stitched by a child slave from Indonesia than a responsibly paid young woman who has to endure the occasional ignominy of her boss running round her workspace with his meat and two veg hanging out?"

It's even worse than the article makes it out to be. I know people who work for AA, and they tell me that the only way stay employed is to sign "optional" agreements, waiving your right to sue for sexual harassment.

You're so right ElizabethLeigh and Nebraska, the journalist is definitely making excuses for Charney - I'm going to see if I can get hold of a contact address for him so we can question why he is condoning it. The "business practices" of this guy are relatively unknown here in England, so I have made all the women I know aware of it, and this forum is a great way to make contact with women elsewhere. Is Charney's misogyny common knowledge in the States and Canada? I know they are a big company (how big?) but surely the more people who know about this, the more chance we have of getting his behaviour to bite him on the ass!

Now being a fan of this brand of clothes, I am kind of shocked that it is run by such a foul man. Not only is it disgusting that he'll masterbate in front of coworkers, reporters, etc., but it is very unprofessional. I am very surprised that he got so far in the clothing industry, and to be successful in general.

I want to meet this man and kick him in the balls, and tell him that's what he has had coming to him if he has his "junk" out all the time.

I already don't buy their shirts because they run so damn small I can barely cram myself into an XXL (when I wear an L or XL in other places).

Not too long ago I was desperate for a job and a nearby AA store had a hiring sign, so I figured what the hell it's work, and went in to apply. Instead of an actual application they gave me a slip of paper with an email address and instructions to send in my resume and 3 pictures of myself so they could "see my sense of style." I was tempted to send the exact same resume in twice, once with pictures of the real me and again with a different name and pictures of a very skinny person and see which they called back. But I couldn't figure out the logistics of doing that without someone figuring it out. I thought asking for photos before being hired was illegal. At the very least it's unethical.
