The Human Rights Campaign Has Stores?

The Human Rights Campaign is a non-profit organization working for the equal rights of Lesbians, Gays, and Transgender people.

"The Human Rights Campaign represents a grassroots force of more than 700,000 members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, HRC envisions an America where GLBT people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community."

I had heard of the HRC before and had seen them at PRIDE days, but I had no idea they had retail stores.  They have stores in San Francisco, Provincetown, and in DC in Dupont.  They sell all kinds of things (including shirts, ties, bracelets, water bottles, etc) and have free buttons and stickers.  The sales benefit the organization.

Some of their stuff is made in the US (IE American Apparel, so it isn't from sweat shops, even though it isn't feminist).  If you are in one of these cities go and check it out.  If you aren't, check out the work they are doing on their website.

HRC actually has a pretty bad record when it comes to trans issues. They pretty much told the transpeople they claim to support that "not everyone gets equality all at once" and then pushed them to the back burner. That is about the time I stopped giving them money. It's sad, because they have the structure to actually get things done, but instead they are contributing to the marginalization of transpeople.

You can also buy things in their online store, by the way.

Dori's right about their overall record on trans issues, but they have done some significant work on a gender non-discrimination measure that is up for popular vote on the 2008 ballot in my state, so I hope that indicates a shift in their policy.

As for donations to HRC, I do donate to them occasionally because they are large, efficient, and visible, and I know that they will use my money in the most productive ways they can to fund some of the issues I care about the most. I do divide up my money, though, and send only 3/4 of what I would have sent to HRC, and then donate the remaining portion to a trans rights organization. Not a perfect system, but I don't really trust them on those issues, so I figure I need to spend the money to support trans people in another venue.
