A Lovely Idea

Please consider making a donation to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin's name. A Planned Parenthood donation is tax deductible, while a political donation isn't. You'll be helping a good cause and even better, PP will send Palin a card telling her of the donation made in her honor!

Planned Parenthood > Donate > Honorary Gifts > "in Sarah Palin's honor".

A suggested address is the McCain campaign headquarters:
McCain for President
1235 South Clark Street
1st Floor
Arlington, VA 22202

This is actually a sort of TERRIBLE idea, unless you've already donated the max ($2,300) to Obama's campaign. It's basically telling McCain/Palin how much money Obama is LOSING. More details on why NOT to donate to PP in Palin's name here: http://jezebel.com/5051413/. They actually suggest that this is a Republican ploy: "Please be careful about forwarding this along. If something like this really went viral, it could do a lot of damage."

A BETTER IDEA: Donate to Planned Parenthood's PAC (which can then use the money to create fabulous political ads like this one, via the Huffington Post) or to the Obama/Biden campaign.

As a post on Jezebel noted, this isn't actually a good idea if you want to help Obama win the election (I guess it's a good idea if you want to say "fuck you" to Sarah Palin). Obama's not getting public funding, so he depends on donations from individuals. And while donations to Planned Parenthood's PAC can be used for political ads, donations to the organization itself can not.

Yeah, I agree that a better idea would be to support the PP PAC. Plus, as horrible as Palin is, we have to remember who picked her...Old Man McCain. And he's been flying under the radar since introducing her.

For those of us who give to PP regularly anyway, I don't see any problem in giving this time in SP's name.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Hilarious!

I have already donated to Obama--first time ever donating to a campaign. I'm also a big fan of Planned Parenthood, and have donated to them in the past. One has nothing to do with the other, for me.

I'll likely still donate more to Obama, too. I'm sure a lot of other people are the same. It's not an either/or situation.

I don't see a problem with this. It's not like I took my $25 that I would have donated to Obama's campaign, and INSTEAD donated it to PP. Many of us can make small donations to both. I think it's a wonderful idea - a great way to protest Sarah Palin's anti-choice stance, while helping to support Planned Parenthood.

If I had any money at all, you bet I would donate to both. Unfortunately, I'm a student.

(I kind of get that a lot of us have a specific max amount we can afford for charities, and that splitting it is technically keeping some from other charities, but if anyone isn't as tight on money as that: if you've already donated to Obama and hadn't thought about donating again, why not send a matched donation to Planned Parenthood? Or if you haven't donated to either yet, but were thinking about giving Obama a certain amount, give him that and give the same amount to PP. Increasing and diversifying your charity isn't the same as taking money away from someone.)

Or, it's a great option if you are still yet unconvinced that Obama is the candidate you want to vote for, even if you are positive you won't be voting for McCain. It's a great way to send your message even if you are still unconvinced.

And anyhow, it's cheeky and I love it. I already did it when they posted this at Shakesville.

Addition - Consider donating to PP of Alaska as they are currently trying to open a location in Juneau - state capital, where the Governor's mansion is. Every woman who lives in Southcentral Alaska (including Ketchikan where the road to nowhere is) must fly to Seattle for an abortion.

Aside from everything political, life DOES still go on outside of washington [SHOCKING] and supporting planned parenthood shouldn't be ignored just because it is election time.

and it is a great fuck you to Palin.

So, my mom actually just forwarded this to me in an email, and this is what I sent back to her:
"I have heard this suggestion, and there's actually some debate over whether it's a good idea or not. On the one hand people are saying that giving this money just to rub it in Palin's face sort of defeats the purpose and you should give the money to Obama since every little bit helps (but I definitely don't think it's an either/or situation for most people so I'm not sure I entirely agree with that argument.). Second, people are saying the money would be better spent, if you are giving because of the election, if it was directly to the PP PAC so they can make more ads and what not directly against McCain to do something more active to ensure an Obama victory in November... On that note though, I say just make 2 donations, maybe spilt what you would have given... it send the message and does some direct action as well. And it all goes to PP anyway."

If I end up doing this, because honestly I enjoy a good "fuck you" every once in a while, I probably will just split my donation. That's just kinda my view on the "issue" of it.

I absolutely despise Palin.

So, I might make a donation to PP. Not through Palin, sorry, I hate all her policies. Can't stand her sexism.

I think this is a fab idea, but for now I will donate my money to Obama. But I have a bad feeling about the election. If McCain wins (fingers crossed against), I will definitely do this! And maybe add in a donation to NOW, Feminists for Free Expression, Bitch magazine, and any other organization I can think of that Palin hates. Or any organization whose work will become even more vital with a McCain administration working against everything I believe in.

I don't know why everyone's poo-pooing this idea. It's not Planned Parenthood is a bad place to give money to.

Planned Parenthood is a great place to donate. Everyone has to choose where to donate money and Planned Parenthood is as legitimate an option as the Obama campaign. They need money too.

As much as everyone is loving this idea, I dare say it comes off as childish and immature.

As much as you respect or don't respect, or even like, Palin I don't think it's fair or dignified to use her name to support an organization (and i'm not saying anything about planned parenthood) she is morally against. she is a woman and a person, and she deserves the right to believe what she wants without being patronized at every turn. as do we.

i mean as far as i know obama's name is not being used to donate to something he is morally opposed to. and i know for a fact we would scream and moan about that.

donate your money for the right reasons, yes?
