Dear, Dear Obama

I agree with you. People's families should be off limits. That said, the far right of the Republican party are not with you on that one, and never have been. They believe that they, the true children of God, know "right" and "wrong" and advocate the changing of laws to that effect: "personal family matters," such as the pregnancy of a young daughter, under their lead, would not be "personal" family matters-- for they would in fact, prefer to dictate to parents and their children what the options are and should be. In their ideal world, I as a pregnant teenager would not have the option of having an abortion, even if my family supported and aided in that decision. In their ideal world, I as a parent would have to endure abstinence education and creationism in schools-- and why? Because they are always in the right about everything. So, according to their own logic, what Bristol Palin and her family choose to do in this very unfortunate situation is very much my business. However, according to my logic, where life is secular and women should have the freedom to choose to do whatever they wish with their bodies, this is nobody's business. So when Sarah Palin comes around to my way of thinking and promises to uphold my right to privacy and choice, I'll stop questioning how this situation reflects on her and her family. My main interest in this, of course, is in how it reflects on the man himself, John McCain. That's right, I don't actually give a shit that Bristol is pregnant, that Todd had a DUI in '84, (though I'll admit I care a lot more about all those other allegations being made about her), but I do think it is worth asking what state of mind McCain was in when he made this choice, with all the apparent pitfalls it was going to immediately bring with it. Oh, and by the way, please bear in mind that you are the one that announced your daughter was pregnant and made it "news." I haven't seen any logic yet that explains why that decision was or had to be made at this time.

Well stated post. And if the GOP is running on their "values" then the application of those are in bounds.
