Anti-choice ads at the train station.

Last Friday I took the subway from the university to downtown while I was running errands. As usual, the trains were awkwardly spaced, so I had plenty of time to read the numerous advertisments on the walls of the train station, and I was shocked by the abundance of offensive ads prominently displayed at the university .

Unfortunately my phone camera wasn't working, so I had to "type" some of the ad text into a memo instead. Here's one of 2 anti choice ads I saw (on opposite sides of the station, so it was impossible to turn away from them):

"Over 95% of women say they were wrong."

Underneath was a picture of a woman sitting on the ground crying. Below the picture was an anti-abortion slogan (I can't remember the exact wording) and a website.

The ad on the opposite wall was similar, stating that "abortion is not a sign that we are free" because abortion is actually a method of CONTROLLING women. Hmm, interesting appropriation of feminist rhetoric, douchebags.

So here's my question: where did the 95% statistic come from (perhaps "95% of women who have abortions say that their pregnancy was accidental"?) and why is it okay for a university train station to have slut-shaming advertisements all over the walls?

I've seen these ads as well, and they're ridiculous. Disgusting really. Today there was actually a pro choice demonstration in the city, just a peaceful thing, no contact with the pro lifers... but it's better than nothing.

Oops, looks like I got the website wrong: it's actually http://www.edmontonprolife.org.

This is disgusting. Why can't pro-choicers advertise like this? These antis are given so much leeway when they shouldn't be. There's no proof whatsoever to support their claims, except studies from biased organisations. Most pro-choice stats that I've seen come from respected, verifiable sources.

Where did you get "slut shaming" from? Is this a transference and you think women who have abortions are sluts?

Why is it OK? I guess because they paid for the wall space so they get to put up what they want.

Ironically, prohibition of abortion will bring women closer to equality with men.

Isn't that what you want?

Anti-choicers lie about EVERYTHING. Only pro-choicers know the truth.

The fact is that 95% of all women who were forced to carry their pregnancies to term come to regret giving birth (info from Planned Parenthood).

WOW! What state is this in? Theres a sign along the highway from my university that says "every heart is a beating heart," for the embryos for full-personhood rights initiative thats been proposed here in Colorado. I want to toss a paint egg at the poster and attach a wire hanger onto it. I hate all this anti-choice BS. All their lies only shows that they have NO substance to their arguments.

Oh and Jean....fuck off! Sooner or later the editors of this blog will give you the ax. Waiting....waiting. Not long yet.

Hey gopher, it's already done. The Feministing girls really takes these things seriously. (I love it!)...I sent an email and literally 2 seconds later troll was banned. (Thanks girls!) So if you ever suspect a troll definitely report it. They definitely want to know about it if someone is being abusive.

Sorry for the off topic post.

Here's my on topic post: About the ads...If I happened to walk by these ads I think I would probably end up doing some vandalizing. I would either take the signs down myself, or scribble in the correct statistics with a BIG BLACK SHARPIE, and probably add a couple counter points just for the hell of it. I don't think that post said where the ads were being shown...Does anyone happen to know? If it's in Boston, or NYC I'll definitely go down to the subway with my big fat sharpie.

gopher - it's actually in Edmonton, Canada at the University of Alberta station.

I might have to make a little trip to the subway late tonight and use your paint egg suggestion. I had a really traumatic miscarriage/abortion (long story) last week, so anti-choice ads are grating on me even more than usual.

meeneecat - great ideas! I'll have to keep that in mind next time I walk past another ad like that. There's plenty of "pregnancy crisis counselling" places that advertise all over the buses and bus stops. Unfortunately, these specific ads are on the walls on the opposite side of the train tracks from the platform, so it would be impossible to reach them with a sharpie.

I remember seeing similar ads in T stations not long after my abortion. They were on the other side of the rails safe from my graffiti anger. I was already burning from the judgmental glare of our culture. I could feel the pushing of shame at me and I hated it. It made me feel like shit not because I realized 'onoes I was wrong' but because it made me realize there were people who were so oppressive and hateful to be judging strangers' lives without any compassion or insight.

Recently I've been putting my self forward to talk about my experiences in the hope that some people who judge the nameless 'drunken sluts who have abortions' will change their stance when confronted by someone they know. I want them to realize they are harming people they know and love: their sisters, wives, friends, aunts, cousins, mothers, grandmothers, and daughters.

It's nice to have time to respond with a sharpie but I'd like to have a fast acting sticker to smack up on those things in passing. Or a blow torch.

If anyone does want to use paint eggs (I dunno, painting the house er....something) a split ball-point pen with the ink tube taken out makes an excellent hollowed out tube for transferring paint to the egg. Just place the hollowed tube in the emptied egg (pierce top and bottom and blow egg gunk out) and place a small funnel on top and pour. You can use wax for sealing the holes.

Just in case you want to creatively decorate your living room....:}

;) Thanks gopher. Maybe I'll do a little redecorating sometime.
