Saudi judge refuses to annul marriage of girl, 8

(CNN) -- A Saudi judge recently refused to annul a marriage between an 8-year-old girl and a 47-year-old man -- a union apparently arranged by the girl's father to settle his debts -- a lawyer in the case told CNN.

On Saturday, the judge, Sheikh Habib Abdallah al-Habib, dismissed a petition brought by the girl's mother because she "is not the legal guardian of the girl," the woman's lawyer Abdullah al-Jutaili said.

"Therefore, she cannot represent her daughter in these proceedings," al-Jutaili said.

This is a society where an 8 year old girl can be legally sold to a 47 year old man. I doubt that the judge is doing anything but correctly applying the law. Lets talk about the kind of culture that allows an arangement like this in the first place.

arrangement.

yes, I agree. and it's only about a society where children can be married off to old men for payment, but also where a mother has no guardian rights over her own child.

I'm usually very cautious when discussing other cultures' values and traditions, as the issues (i.e. polygamy, FGM, etc.) are always much more complicated and deep-routed than what appears on the surface, and when western, "rich", privileged and outsider feminists attempt to impose their values on issues they believe can be defined in black and white terms, [we] alienate ourselves further from our sisters born in circumstances different from our own. But I'm still going to say that this practice is just plain fucked up.

Bush's buddies are all about "family values".

Funny how we threatened to sanction some European countries for decriminalizing some forms of drugs and did the same with Africa and India over birth control and health education. But if you want to fuck little girls you just need to have some oil to sell.

As long as they don't let fags get married I guess it's ok.

Is it Canada or Spain we're at war with now?

Agree here fully logrus! Bullshit.

Sadly, traditional Islamic law is 100% with this verdict. Girls can be married off at any age, and only males can be guardians of women. Consent is only important in a marriage when the female in question is past puberty.
