...I think about how escorting today was different. About once a month I escort at a DC Planned Parenthood. This Planned Parenthood happens to be right down the street from the White House, so it attracts crazies from all over the country around the anniversary of Roe. Us escorts always manage to have a good time, joking around, teasing the antis, etc. Being in NW DC we also get tons of support from the passersby. But usually our happy attitude has sad undertones, because we knew the crazy antis harassing patients, blocking thier paths and making them cry, had support in the White House. They weren't just annoyances, they were annoyances with power. Not any more. This time our jokes were not bittersweet. This time we could look down the street and smile at the sight of the White House. This week President Obama has rescinded the global gag rule and sent Mark Dybul to the curb. In the pipeline is the Lily Ledbetter Act as well as a bill on birth control pricing and promises of support for comprehensive sex education. This time escorting was different because I wasn't secretly scared that I could turn around and Planned Parenthood would be gone. We still have many challenges to face, but at least the climb is not so steep in this uphill battle. Happy Roe, and thanks to the passersby on the street for providing coffee and breakfast- if y'all are reading this, you are what keep us going!
