PETA Denied Commerical Air Time during the Super Bowl

PETA was denied air time for their proposed Super Bowl commercial that once again objectifies women in the pursuit of stopping meat consumption.

'Veggie Love': PETA's Banned Super Bowl Ad

The New York Post reported this today, while PETA's site gives a great description of the commerical: "PETA's ad—which features a bevy of beauties who are powerless to resist the temptation of veggie love—was deemed too hot for the Super Bowl."

Exploiting one group (women) to stop exploitation of another (animals) is something I have never understood. This isn't the first time PETA has been highlighted on Feministing for their impeccable taste and class.

I am so glad that you wrote about this!!

I saw this ad last night and almost wrote about it, but it was about 2:30am and I knew that I would not produce something coherent due to the hour but especially since PETA always makes me incredibly angry in their ad campaigns. (So much so that I ended up writing a good 25% of my senior thesis on PETAs advertising strategies perpetuating patriarchy and sexism without really making a case for their cause but that's another story for another time...)

All that being said, this ad is gross on so many levels and I could not be happier that it is banned from Super Bowl Sunday...I just wish it was banned all together!

disclaimer: i hate almost all of peta's ads including this one.

however, given the sexist nature of many ads, especially the super bowl commercials and the often sexual performances at the half time show, i don't understand why super bowl refused to air this ad. i'm guessing they don't take animal ethics seriously enough? i don't think they refused the ad because it objectifies women, and i don't think they refused it for sexual content. sure;y we've seen equally or more objectifying ads, super bowl or otherwise.

How is this even remotely effective.

What makes this super funny is that they are turning a PETA ad into a porn...except they must have been the only people in the history of the world to ever follow the storyline in a porno movie. Guys are just going to watch this and jerk off. Not deeply consider the detrimental effects of torturing and eating animals.

POINT
No nasty guy who watches football watches porn for the life changing message at the end.

I see your point - it's basically a Maxim ad, but with a little tag at the end telling you it's from PETA (and if you don't know what "PETA" stands for, this commercial won't teach you)

It's basically softcore porn with a political message tacked on - and even then, in a sexual way (GO VEG is just one letter away from GO VAG - and I'm sure their ad agency told them that!)

Sorry, this add is not going to get any male football fan (including me) to put down the spare ribs and buffalo wings!

I hate PETA. Not only because they are exploiting one group (women) to stop exploitation of another (animals), but that they don't accomplish anything. All they do are scare tactics and female objectification. They aren't raising money to open more shelters. They aren't starting a no-kill policy at the shelters they do have. They aren't petitioning the government or talking to the state legislature to make more humane laws. You want to thank an animal rights group, thank the Humane Society, which is recently testing no-kill policies at select shelters. Thank the ASPCA, who have actually gotten laws passed. PETA seems to think that they are raising awareness, but they don't realize that it's only half the battle. Once they start doing that, perhaps I'll have more respect for them.

Okay. Rant over.

Are they really? That's great news.

That's what I'm inferring at least. I don't know if it's a national thing or regional, but the Human shelter here in Springfield, MO decided to be a no-kill shelter. And I've heard Columbia, MO is doing that too. I hope more catch on.

I hate PETA so much. Some months ago, my initial page was globo.com (Brazilian news site) and from week to week there were photos of the so-called PETA "protests" in which there were only... Nude women? Semi-nude women? Semi-nude women in cages? Semi-nude women emullating bullfights, painted with red paint and lying on the floor?

What the fuck PETA. I really, really don't understand: You want to stop animal cruelty giving the dominating mass (Males) fap material and objectifying women? Your logic amazes me to no end. I thought that, as a big organisation, they knew that it does nothing on the big run nor in the small run. Then why? Why they objectfy women? Everyone knows it does nothing good. Why, PETA, why?

If PETA reeaally thinks that using sex is the only way to recruit people to their cause, then for fucks sake, at LEAST throw in some men thrusting a tomato or something.

I get the impression I'm a terrible person for finding this funny? It's pretty obvious to me the entire thing is supposed to just be stupid. I mean, who conducted this study referenced? It's completely baseless and an attention grab. PETA does what it does to get attention and make fervor -- not even thinking about anything else.

PETA proudly touts itself as the world's most successful radical organization. That indicates, to me, anyway, that they don't care about anyone other than themselves.

I think this is basically the issue. PETA doesn't care about much except getting results. So they don't consider anything except what is going to work well, and work quickly toward their specific goals. Obviously you can argue about whether something like this will actually be effective, but PETA doesn't care if it's not feminist. The have goals and that's all they care about.

Interestingly, if you look at the PETA website FAQ, they draw a parallel between animal rights with both the abolitionist movement and women's rights movement, in that at one point, the things we now see as wrong were seen as "ok." Such hypocrites. So ironic. I'm a vegetarian and I hate PETA

I've been vegetarian since BEFORE I was born - my family is vegetarian for religious reasons. I've also been a feminist as long as I've been old enough to think for myself.

So basically, I'm a life long, hard-core feminist and vegetarian. And it pains me that these values seem to be so mutually exclusive to one another - particularly on this blog and in the PETA ad campaigns.

Ultimately, I'm actually not offended by this ad - in fact, I kind of like it. All too often, vegetarians get called the same things feminists do as people that challenge the status quo - prudes, followers of a "phase" or a "fad". It amazes me how I've been called these things for being a believer of women's rights and animal rights...about both things I feel very strongly about.

Ultimately, although PETA is far from perfect, I think they make their point - that vegetarianism is not "prudish", that it's a way of life as opposed to a "phase" or "fad". And although I agree that the women they depict in this ad are all white, thin, and conventionally attractive - I believe that's part of what makes people pay attention, which is unfortunate. I'm not saying objectification is justified - I'm merely saying that this is the best way PETA can get attention. For this reason, it is understandable that PETA would use sex to sell vegetarianism.

I obviously don't mean to condone using women as objects - but is the reason that this is offensive to you fabulous feministing-ers because it portrays women sexually? I'm just curious because it's not every day that I find myself on a different brain-wave than the other posters on this site!

What do you all think? What can well tell PETA to do instead of objectifying women to get attention (and call it raising awareness?)

In answer to your question, which is basically what everyone has been saying so far, PETA needs to stop using shock tactics to push their beliefs on other people. As someone has already pointed out, that's kind of their schtick, so probably not going to have a whole lot of luck there.

Personally, I found the ad to be actually pretty funny, in a ridiculous way (I was heard to exclaim 'that was the stupidist thing I've ever seen!' when it was over). If you ignore PETA trying to force a message on you and pretend the ad is by the National Coalition of Organic Farmers, then maybe the humorous aspect could be a little clearer? Or maybe I'm just desensitized to sex in the media...
