CNNPolitics reports that Obama is considering using the Presidential power of executive order to overturn what is commonly known as the "global gag rule," a policy that prohibits the United States from giving money to international family planning groups that offer, promote or refer patients to abortion providers and/or abortion counseling.
Reinstating the gag rule was George W. Bush's first executive order as President in 2001, 2 days after he was sworn in and on the anniversary of Roe V. Wade.
January 22, 2009 will be the 36th anniversary of Roe V. Wade, and what better way to honor women's reproductive rights in the United States than by allowing funding for women's reproductive health and rights throughout the world?
Let's hope President Obama (that feels so GREAT to write!!) follows through with this and lives up to his reputation of being feminist friendly. It would be a fabulous way to begin his presidency.

On change.gov you can go to the Citizen's Briefing Book and vote on the issues that you most want President Obama to address. You can vote for family planning in third world countries.

That is great news! Thanks for posting this.
And congratulations Americans on your new President! Here in Canada we have been watching "Obama-mania" closely and waiting for Bush to get out of office!
I look forward to hearing more women-friendly news coming from the US now that Obama is the man in charge!
you know what feels equally good to write?
FORMER PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH
Wait, let's do that again.
FORMER PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH
Sweet. That is all, carry on!
This is totally dorky, but one of the things that made me all misty-eyed today was going to whitehouse.gov and seeing that not only is there a "Women" section under "Agenda" (and wow, "agenda" being used in a businesslike way rather than as a scare word!!) but women's issues AND GLBT ISSUES are actually included under a section named civil rights. Civil rights, y'all. The President of the United States says that equal pay for women, repealing don't-ask-don't-tell, etc, are civil rights issues. It's going to take a while for that to sink in.
Um, anyway, yes, there are a pile of things including repealing the global gag rule that I really hope he's able to come through with -- and I actually do have pretty high hopes; the time seems right to at least start making some of the basic changes necessary (like repealing some of the ridiculous policies of the past administration).
I really hope he follows through with this. What a wonderful way to start of his term!
Let's do more than hope, let's PUSH. If we don't push this president, he's going to fizzle out. We haven't been pushing him and look what he's already done! His cabinet is as middle-of-the-road-to-rightish as it could be! We need to call him out as much as possible to make him be the president that we want and he promised.
I feel like I can finally take a breath of fresh air and calm down a little bit (read: LITTLE bit!).
That said, Bush is gone... it's time to start cleaning up the messes he left!!!
I don't think Obama is "considering" it; I've heard for months that it's a Day One certainty.
Halle-fucking-lujah! We have a president who cares about women's rights at home AND abroad! :D

So basically you call for a 1-party political system where all the constituents agree with your opinions and politics?
This is the one respectable thing he did: He appointed a cabinet that has many different points of views and ideas, so he can draw on a DIVERSITY of information and opinion. And that's bad? Riiiight-oooo.
Anyway,
This guy hasn't been in office for 24 hours yet and he's already just lost my support.
We're facing a financial crisis at home. Sure, it's global, but it's hitting America the worst, I think.
So his plan? Send more money overseas? To please the wimminz? Har har. Yeah this is gonna be a fun 4 years.
I think you might be making too much of this. Repealing/reinstating the global gag rule has come to be kind of a tradition in the first few days a president of the opposing party is in office. Reagan started, Clinton repealed, Bush reinstated....Obama will repeal.
I don't think I'm making a big deal out of anything.
America needs to contract. Focus on on-shore production rather than off-shore production. We need to find ways to use our money to stimulate the economy and strengthen it.
When I see the words "send" and "money" and "INTERnational" I think one thing: "send. money. overseas. other countries."
Not the wisest choice in an economic crisis.
The money is already going overseas for family planning clinics abroad. It's just that with the gag rule repealed, the money will be permitted to be given to clinics that support and provide abortions and abortion counseling, rather than clinics that don't even mention abortion as an option for a pregnancy.
