President Obama's statement on Roe v. Wade 36th Anniversary

(The following is part of Amplify 's weeklong Roe v. Wade Blog-a-thon )

Via TAPPED :

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.

While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.

I was hoping that the Global Gag Rule would finally bite the dust on this significant day, but it looks like we might have to wait until tomorrow or next week. I'm impatient!

Still, what a difference an election can make!

It's so amazing to me how the election of someone new can change so much. This was my first time voting and I'm so proud of the outcome, so proud that women's rights will finally be thought of and not pushed aside like they have been for the last eight years(and even longer before that). It shows that if we fight long enough and aren't afraid to let our voices be heard, then progress for women's rights will happen. We,of course, still have so much more to accomplish but what an amazing start.

is it weird that this brought tears to my eyes?

i am so far very impressed with president obama. i'm hopeful that there are more good things to come (and if there isn't, i'm sure we will let him know how we feel about it!!)

It's fine to comment that she has good biceps, but I think it's stupid to say she'll inspire women to do it too. Women are already "inspired" enough to work out, for bad reasons and good reasons. I will say that reducing her *fitness level* to having good biceps is bad. This is what is annoying- too many women work out to look a certain way rather than to be strong. I'm sorry but standing infront of the mirror lifting light weights bedroom furniture to get "Michelle Obama biceps" before your wedding doesn't make you fit. This is what bothers me about the comment.
