Quick Hit: 2009 Female Mechanics Calendar

What a wonderful idea - photographer Sarah Lyon is selling 2009 Female Mechanics Calendar featuring photos and profiles of female mechanics. It's inspiring to see women succeed in a traditionally male field, and a great feminist alternative to more girly calendars (which all seem to feature puppies and babies).

This is fantastic!

Months ago, I was looking through a motorcycle magazine, and I was surprised to see them do the right thing. They have a very standard layout -- big pictures of each side of the bike, a few close-ups, and one of the bike and builder, usually pretty small. Then they got to a bike built by a woman. She was a former model. She was bleach-blond with huge breasts. And she had help from male friends on her first bike. So I would have expected a huge photo of the builder, basically reducing her to a model, and then a cursory discussion of the bike. Not so! Standard photo layout, focused on the bike, and the copy dealt with the bike. It didn't ridicule the builder; instead, it talked aobut how she went from model for a parts maker to a fan to a builder, and discussed design choices she made like a very low seat to accomodate her 5'2" frame. I was surprised and impressed that, when offered the opportunity to do the right thing, they took it. I'll see if I can find the article.

Motorsports is one area where talented women have shoved their way into the boys' club -- slowly, but steadily -- and I would like the see that happen with the rest of the car- and bike-culture that surrounds it.

Hi everyone. I actually just went to the screening that Emily mentioned above last night, and it reminded me how much I love feminist discourse, and how much I miss having it on a daily bedroom furniture basis. Did this group ever get together? Either way, anyone up for another one?
