I attend a conservative private Christian university in the south and while they are allowed to have a school sanction anti-choice student group, we are not allowed to have a pro-choice group.
In honor of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade this group, dubbed "Bears for Life" (our mascot is the bears) has decided to have a film screening about how Roe v. Wade has contributed to the falling apart of the family in our great nation.
In celebration of their event and our own private celebration for Roe v. Wade we have decided to create a mock-up of their fliers as we cannot take any outward actions.
This is their poster:
Above Text:
The single most powerful force affecting the fate and future of society
Demographic Winter the decline of the human family
This is ours:
The above text reads:
Bears for getting a life
Matthew 7:11 - Don't judge so that you are not judged.
Bears for getting a life invites you to leave those with differing beliefs alone and to get involved in a more productive and worthwhile activity!
When: Forever Ever
Where: Life
For more info: Ask Bears For Life why they CHOOSE to be pro-life (the key here being it was their choice), and why they have the right to make that choice for you.
This poster was originally created to post when Bears For Life plan their candlelight vigil outside our town's Planned Parenthood. Fortunately they haven't been able to orchestrate any of those as of late so we decided to post this gem for the film screening, not exactly applicable but fun nonetheless!
We plan on distributing some literature on Thursday about why Roe v. Wade is so important and what it exactly entails since I just received word that one of my colleagues was once told that Roe v. Wade had to do with a woman who wanted to kill her baby and was originally told she couldn't but then it was ruled by the government that she could. Yikes!

Good job on doing something and not just letting these anti-choice warriors get away with what they're doing.
In my perspective the only thing that works is direct action such as this.
On sunday here in Portland, Oregon Right To Life held a memorial vigil (a very loud one) and the fact that we showed up to counter them was so important. They brought out 7000 people into the heart of a supposed "liberal" city.
We on the other hand started out with about 100 counter protesters and then dwindled down to about 60. It was one of the most violent protests I've ever been to, but I find that things like this are so important, when they aren't challenged, they get empowered, and they have a lot of money backing them up.
I also think that you should really challenge your school to accepting your pro-choice group, many christians are pro-choice and we need them out there challenging the right-wing agenda.
awesome.
Are schools allowed to deny students the right to meet as a club simply because the school doesn't agree with the club's politics? This seems wrong on so many levels...I mean, isn't the school infringing upon your right to free speech as well as your right to assemble? Is there any way to challenge the school's decision?
Great job in using such a creative method to speak out against this anti-choice group...it's definitely important that the pro-choice message gets out to students, especially with the school trying so actively to control the type of beliefs and messages that students are exposed too.
Keep up the good (and much needed) work!
According to them because they are a private institution we have given up our First Amendment rights, according to them we cannot even protest peacefully without their consent.
We have an Atheist and Agnostic group that has been trying to become a chartered student organization for years but because it has to do with religion (or lack thereof) it cannot be a formal group because it is not Christian (and even this is a stretch as it was a former rule that no non-Baptist religious group was allowed to exist).
I run a human rights educational group and we have been deemed the closest thing there is to a pro-choice group on campus. So much so that when someone from the school paper wrote about abortion they were forced to come to us to hear the opposing side (luckily the journalist was liberal).
Um, don't you pay them?
mazhira,
I'm pretty sure I know where you go to school --I graduated from there last year. Hell, we may even know each other! Let's just say Bears for Life and Baptist institution in the south sound very familiar to me. I belonged to the campus Democrat association, and that was hard enough.
I'm glad to hear that pro-choice liberals are making a fuss; I only wish I had gotten more involved in my time there. Keep it up, and try to engage the anti-choicers more! My only advice would be to be more earnest and educational and less satirical; there are already enough satirical voices on that campus, and the message can get lost among the usual pranks.
Good luck!
This may be too personal, but I was wondering why you chose to go to this school? I know how much I've appreciated being in a liberal atmosphere for college, and I can't imagine what a hard time I'd have had in college if I was surrounded by people who thought gay's didn't deserve equal rights or people who thought feminism was a bad word.
I guess I have a false notion of most colleges as a little liberal bubble, where the college republicans are a minority on campus and everybody laughs at their shenanigans.
Good luck on your protest! I hope you can make a dent. :) And good luck dealing with an unfriendly and restrictive atmosphere, I hope you and your friends are able to have some voice on campus!
Legal abortion causing the decline of the family? Then I guess the family isn't that strong to begin with.
piratejenny,
We're actually distributing some material tomorrow that will explain the history of Roe v. Wade and why it is so important.
If you do indeed know where I'm writing from then you'll know that one of the main problems is misinformation. A lot of the people I encounter really have no idea what they are talking about. If you graduated last year and you were there in spring 08 you may have encountered something we did in small portions having to do with actual sex ed and condom distribution (which is of course not allowed).
AgnesScottie,
I have no idea why I go here...I prefer to call it a series of unfortunate events. The point of my being here took a backseat to why I stayed here. After one semester I realized I couldn't just leave it the way I found it without at least a fight. That is why a few choice people and I like to stick ourselves out there.

I go to a Catholic school up north, and while the majority of the professors are quite liberal, my pro-choice feminist group was still not given official recognition. We do, however, have the support of one of the most leftist academic departments here, and have been allowed to use their resources to make Zines and fliers and hold events. You could see if there's a department at your school that would allow you to get the word out about your group. Ours meets in a room that's technically not supposed to be for official meetings.
You know, I’m pretty sure that “demographic winter” thing has to do with a ton of articles about how people of European ancestry are being outbred by people of other races and religions. Lemme see if I can find something…
The Nation | Missing: The 'Right' Babies by Kathryn Joyce
Read it! She explains why this whole thing is just another form of race panic and it’s run by people who oppose not only abortion but contraception and women’s right as well. This woman apparently also wrote a book on the Quiverfull movement. And it looks like the student group was pretty unoriginal in their flier, as “Demographic Winter” is a documentary (more like a propaganda film).
my awful catholic school would plan "field trips" for the religion class (only those interested) to abortion clinics. students were encouraged to BRING CAMERAS to make the women feel uncomfortable.
its disgusting.
