“Johanna Sigurdardottir, named as Iceland’s prime minister on Sunday, is the first openly lesbian head of government in Europe, if not the world – at least in modern times.”

Does her being a lesbian, or even a woman, instantly make her a better politician or leader or somehting?
I’m glad!
That said, there’s probably going to be a lot of misogynistic rampaging by those ‘internet guys’ who feel threatened when a woman is a lesbian as it means she finds women attractive but wouldn’t have sex with a man as well at the same time, therefore making her redundant as a human being.
Hopefully she can do something to change public perception and misconceptions about lesbianism.
Not necessarily, althrough three decades in government might well do.
There is also the well-supported rationale that groups with fewer socio-economic advantages logically tend to have worked harder and longer to get to the same position, ie. she is likely to be more talented and diligent than a heterosexual man with the same career path.
I feel that this is an important step in politics towards greater acceptance – now Barack Obama (sadly) and other leaders may not support gay marriage, but they may well find themselves doing business and diplomatic protocol with a capable, middle-aged woman who has been married to another woman for seven years.
It’s sad that the Icelandic Parliament couldn’t bring itself to elect an openly lesbian woman prime minister until after her predecessor – a macho man “master-of-the-universe” Gordon Gekkoesque speculator creep – totally wrecked the Icelandic economy.
He took a sustainable country who’s economy was based on fishing, providing transatlantic airline services and geothermal power and made the country the # 1 money launderer of Europe.
Now she has to pick up the pieces – good luck, Johanna Sigurdardottir!
Incidentally, Sigurdardottir is the country’s first working class prime minister – she used to be a flight attendant on Icelandic Airlines.
