Identity Theft Targets Women

Forbes Magazine recently did an article on identity theft, and why, with some statistics, it looks like women are targeted more often than men.  Some reasons:  women use "brick and mortar" buildings to do more shopping than men, men use "techie" gadgets that protect their finances more than women.

Not really sure how I feel about this- on the one hand it sounds a bit bogus, like, oh, girls, you are shopping too much and don't like new-fangled technology THAT's why your identity is stolen.  But on the other, maybe it's true?  Check it out- what do ya'll think?

I don't know about that. I think maybe it's reaching for a gender gap. When my identity was stolen, it was because someone stole my wallet and I didn't know not to have my SSN on my driver's license. It took something like two years for me to find out -- when I got a collections notice!

I wonder about the digital divide in gender. I suppose that explanation could make sense.

I think this line from the story sums it up: "The disparity between men and women just shows we need more education about how these safeguards work."

It comes down to that.

Personally, my husband always insists that I not bank online or shop online because he says it will be easier for people to steal my info. But the two times my credit cards have been compromised where through brick and mortar situations.

Yeah, I shop online all the time and *knock-on-wood* I've never had a problem. However, my mother-in-law had her credit card number stolen and used somewhere between the AT&T store and Target. She suspects it was a worker at one of those stores. Luckily her credit card company noticed some out of the ordinary transactions and called her.
