Sentencing circles, child abuse and domestic violence

I found this an interesting article, even if the National Post is so right-wing they sound loopy a lot of times. It's about whether Canada should continue to use sentencing circles for the First Nations.

One thing the article mentioned was that women may be getting intimidated into participating in the sentencing circles of their rapists, batterers, etc.

I'm wondering what the experience has been in the U.S., Australia and U.K.

This happened very close to where I live. A First Nations man got very drunk one night and left two babies outside in -50 degree weather wearing only diapers and a T-shirt; the children were found frozen the next morning. This is a man who had earlier refused to let a relative look after his children for the evening, who has 51 previous criminal convictions, who beats his pregnant common law wife, and who consistently violates the conditions of his release.

In spite of all this, the sentencing circle, in all its wisdom, has decided he has suffered enough and should not be punished for the deaths of his children. That is why there is so much questioning as to why sentencing circles should be used.

It looks to me like it's not a flier, but a page from a "men's magazine" from the fifties. They tended to have "news articles" which were essentially excuses to show pictures of naked or semi-naked women. Full-frontal nudity would run afoul of the postal decency laws, so they'd compromise on stuff like that over-the-shoulder shot where you can see part of her bedroom furniture breast. Not quite sure who decided it belonged on that site, though.
