Funding Crisis Pregnancy Centers: Urgent Action Needed in Virginia!

Imagine you are a woman facing an unintended pregnancy.  After careful consideration, you decide to obtain an abortion and schedule an appointment at a clinic listed under "abortion services" in a local phone book. When you arrive for your appointment you are lectured, given misinformation about the risk of abortion, and refused referrals to actual abortion providers.

Imagine your suprise when you realize you are not at a legitimate reproductive health care clinic, but rather have been fooled into visiting a "crisis pregnancy center."

How would you feel if Virginia Governor Tim Kaine (newly elected chair of the Democratic National Committee) signed a bill that could funnel up to $65,000 a month to organizations like this one?

Last month the Virginia state legislature passed SB 817, which authorizes the creation of "Choose Life" license plates and creates a state-approved funding stream for "crisis pregnancy centers."  The bill awaits action by Governor Tim Kaine.  He will make a decision on the bill by April 8, and until then we need all pro-choice Virginians to speak out against the deceptive tactics of "crisis pregnancy centers" by asking him to veto SB 817!

"Crisis pregnancy centers" have been documented using deceptive and coercive tactics to prevent women facing an unintended pregnancy from making a fully informed choice. (See here , here and here.)  States like Virginia should be funding legitimate, comprehensive reproductive health clinics--not CPCs, whose missions have nothing to do with health care and everything to do with an anti-choice political agenda.

Please take action by contacting Governor Kaine today!

Just a heads up:

It doesn't seem to be letting students (with a college-based address) sign the petition. I was given a message saying it was restricted to residents of VA only. Understandable, yes, but it can't possibly know whether the person attending college in VA is a resident or not (if they are choosing to use their school address).

When you attack any alternative that does not end in the death of the unborn baby, it is hard to buy the claim that you are not pro-abortion. It seems that any truly informed choice should want one to at least consider the health risks to the woman.

I also find it ironic that Planned Parenthood can hide the rape of minor girls and yet feminists say not a word about that or about actual infanticide taking place after the baby has been delivered. Maybe if you are equally critical of those things before attacking other groups that do not seek to kill the unborn baby first, then you might have some more credibility.

I wanted to address this since this cropped up as an edit to the page recently. Feministing is avaliable to everyone and is read widely by young & old, women & men, and liberal & conservative. However, the target audience of Feministing is young progressive women. There are some posts about other groups of people, and different voices are welcome, but that is the target bedroom furniture audience. Thanks!
