Girl Sues Over Sexist, Homophobic Dress Code

A 17-year-old girl is suing her school for not allowing her to wear a tux to the prom. She's a lesbian and felt that wearing a dress promoted a sexual identity that she does not express.

I am disgusted how a school can be this overtly sexist and homophobic. How would wearing a tux ruin anyone else's prom experience? It can't. This is all based in one thing, and it's not right at all.

P.S. Do not read the comments on Indy Star unless you feel like poking your eyes out with a sharp stick.

How much do you want to bet that if this student had a male partner (the jockier and more conventionally heteronormative the better), that she would face no obstacles in wearing her tux?

And I know I'm not the only one old enough to remember that in the 80s, (hetero-identified; conscpicusouly "femme") women frequently wore tuxes to special events, usually with heels, purse, makeup, and done-up hair.

This is more gender essentializing AND homophobic b.s. Our society is so lost, so far gone on in anti-humanism that I wonder if it will ever heal itself.

God, I wonder this every day....it's nice to hear someone else say it. Thanks.

God I hope she wins.

I came across this same issue at my high school prom back in 2004. A male friend of mine wanted to wear a dress to prom. He took it to the student council, being very respectful and asking for permission. And they turned him away. It was absolutely rediculous. I think this issue may be more common than we think. (this was a public high school by the way)

There should be no gender norms. Ever. Schools have a duty to educate and they are the last places that should promote ignorance.

Bizarre. My sister and her friends went to prom as Fidel Castros.

This comment just really angered me. Not only during this whole thing was Kanye West just so full of himself (like usual) but he was basically excusing domestic violence. What it sounded like IMO was that Kanye didn't think Brown bedroom furniture should be punished for his actions at all. Not by the media, the public or the police.
And I hate when people use the term "mistake" when describing a horribly violent crime. It's like WTF?

Isn't it interesting that they also think that 2 people of the same sex getting married is somehow ruining someone else's marriage? Really sad.
