Naturally one would weep at a birthday party for a icon who calls upon everyone there to be outrageous.
Weep people did last night, at one of many celebrations of Gloria Steinem's 75th birthday at the home of her dear friend Marlo Thomas. Steinem was as funny as inspiring as when she told students at Smith College's commencement :
This post is an invitation to be a fly on the wall of last night's party. But first, it is also to alert you that you are also probably about to throw a party of your own.

You're damn right I'm about to have a party!
Best reason for a party... ever.
Here is one suggestion of how you might celebrate this special and truly outrageous woman. You can celebrate a rabble-rousing icon and raise money for the Ms. Foundation to ensure that Gloria's tradition of grassroots organizing continues to grow. Watch an inspiring video featuring Gloria and Ms. Foundation grantees that you can show at your party and visit our house party information site where you can download a complete party kit.
The Ms. Foundation's new Outrageous Acts campaign, launched just last week, is already catching on.

Gloria Steinem's mother was abandoned by her father, having earlier on given up her career for him. I think that poor Gloria’s problem wasn't the fact that society reserved certain rôles for men and others for women. I think the problem was that poor Gloria and her mother were UNLOVED. That is very sad. But, instead of preaching MORE LOVE, Ms. Steinem has helped to pave the way for a loveless society, in which even little children can no longer count on their mothers being there for them full time. Here’s just one example: A BBC News item dated 2 February, 2009, states that selfish adults damage childhood, making today’s children “anxious and troubled”. A panel of independent experts working for three years has suggested, among other findings, that “having many more working mothers has contributed to the damage done to children”. Most British women now work and their new economic independence contributes to levels of family break-up which are higher in the UK than in any other Western European country. I’m sure that American children are as needy as British children when it comes to needing the love of parents… Unfortunately, the “liberation” movement of which Ms. Steinem is an important member has always put "women’s rights" before “love” and the “rights of children”. I think the demand for abortion rights says it all! So does advocating sex before marriage, that is, sex without love… I do wish that poor Gloria would start advocating selfless LOVE, for a change… So, instead of something outrageous, wouldn’t it be better next time just to say “I LOVE YOU” to the person you most love?
A First Nations man got very drunk one night and left two babies outside in -50 degree weather wearing only diapers and a T-shirt; the children were found frozen the next morning. This is a man who had earlier refused to let a relative look after his children for the evening, who has bedroom furniture 51 previous criminal convictions, who beats his pregnant common law wife, and who consistently violates the conditions of his release.
bedroom furniture, your comment reminds me of three very sad incidents I read about in the Brazilian press, over the years, when young FATHERS left their young babies locked in their automobiles with all windows closed in the burning tropical sun. In all cases the babies suffocated to death. My wife and I have six children and I know that NOTHING can replace the love of a mother who bore her babies through nine months of pregnancy; breastfed them for several months and was always there for them....
Its really interesting
