I'm so appalled

On Wednesday, a nine-year-old girl who was pregnant with twins after her stepfather raped her underwent an abortion in Brazil despite vocal objection from the Brazil Roman Catholic Church.

It's good to know that two fetuses are more important than the physical and psychological well-being of an actual child. I thought it might be morally reprehensible to force an eighty pound girl to give birth to twins after a grown man brutally attacks her, but clearly I stand corrected.

It makes me absolutely sick to see instances where this little girl - who probably wants nothing more than to be a kid again - has to put up a fight just to begin piecing her life back together. Was she treated with respect and dignity during this process? Is she receiving the help she needs? I don't know. I would like to assume yes, but when a huge entity like the Catholic Church turns on a defenseless child, I'm somewhat skeptical that the healing process was really the number one priority on the table here.

that is so sad and sickening. The Catholic church has a pretty horrible track record with ACTUAL children. They seem to only love the hypothetical and pre-born ones.

Let me appall you even more: The Church said the abortion is worse than the rape. One archbishop said: "He commited an enormous crime, but it isn't on the excomungation list. This stepfather commited an horrible sin. But more horrible than that, do you know what is it? Abortion, to kill an innocent life." (http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/Brasil/0,,MUL1031860-5598,00-ARCEBISPO+DIZ+QUE+SUSPEITO+DE+VIOLENTAR+MENINA+NAO+PODE+SER+EXCOMUNGADO.html In portuguese).

Yes, let that sink a bit.

They excomungated the feminists that helped the girl, her mom and the medics. The rapist hasn't been excomungated.

At least our president said the medics are right and the Church is wrong.

And from what I heard, she is well now.

But still, this is disgusting.

To excomungate the medics and the mother but not the rapist.

TO HAVE AN ABORTION IS WORSE THAN RAPING A NINE-YEAR-OLD GIRL FOR THREE YEARS AND GETTING HER PREGNANT WITH TWINS.

Fuck you, Church. Fuck you. With fire.

The icing on the cake is how the lawyer said the girl should have a cesarian. Not only does the Church not consider her to have enough agency to decide who gets to use her uterus, but they also don't think she has enough agency to decide whether she wants her abdomen intact. Nice. I really don't understand why people are Catholic. Honestly, I don't.

I don't understand the problem the church has with it myself. The pregnancy threatened the very life of the girl and her fetuses, they made the best decsion they could given the situation.

A pregnancy that threatens the life of the mother and/or child is far different from a pregnancy that is merely inconvient.

I wanted to address this since this cropped up as an edit to the page recently. Feministing is avaliable to everyone and is read widely by young & old, women & men, and liberal & conservative. However, the target audience of Feministing is young progressive women. There are some posts about other groups of people, and different voices are welcome, but that is the target bedroom furniture audience. Thanks!
