Fishfingers have genders now?

I'm a long time lurker and this advert disturbed me, so after not seeing it written about I decided to join up.

It's a UK ad, and there's so much wrong with it, from the stereotypical (pink) 'female' fishfinger to the shock the 'males' show when 'she' strips despite their initiating of the interaction- double standards anyone?

Besides these fact, they're creating gendered fish fingers. The only thing I can say in its favour is maybe it's satire and I didn't pick up on it.

No UKfilmzo it's not satire unfortunately...and you missed nothing deep or meaningful about it - believe me!!

I am from the UK and I have have had my eyeballs assaulted by this crap since it was released as an advert on British TV.

EVERYTHING is wrong with it - from the ridiculous sexualisation of a foodstuff...to yes, as you said the total hyporcrasy and sexism of the "male" fsih fingers expecting the "female" fish finger to flash...and then being shocked when she does (DUH!!)

It's just another patetic example of "we can't think of another, more clever way to advertise this product...so let's stick in some misogyny then everyone will love it"!!! Happens a lot in tv programmes as well now. Tired really.

Yeah, I've seen it too. Maybe I'm a failure as a feminist, but I thought it was quite funny.

Fishsticks are bad enough. They don't need misogyny attached to them.

So, if fish sticks can be female, liking them doesn't make you a gay fish?

(If you don't get it, ignore it) :)

OMG I was just thinking the same thing. We can tell Kanye West that everything is ok now xp.

With that reference in mind the commercial kind of cracked me up, but the advert in and of itself is kind of an eyeroller.

And perhaps I'm just the only perve here, but the impression I got was that there was some sort of a vaginal euphemism (so did my partner) and I don't like it when vaginas are compared to fishy things :(.

lol no i got it too. i acutually thought of the song just from reading the title of the article.

i hope im not being lame, but i thought it was kind of funny.

This post stuck with me a bit through out the night, so I'm going to post something on it since I've had some thought with it.

I think that this really, more than anything else, hones in on the idea of "feminine" versus "masculine" colors. The fish stick is female because it's pink. So, if it's a satire of anything, it's the idea that pink is a girl's color.

They fall over from the shock of her flashing them and how beautiful she is (using the genders in the commercial for reference, of course). It's implying that the salmon sticks are all salmon - "so much pink!" "I wasn't expecting that."

I think that if this commercial played out if all the sticks were women, there will still be some problem with it. If they were men, then there would be almost a praise because of aforementioned color play and that it's kind of gay in the way that could cause waves some places, as lesbianism tends to be more socially acceptable in Western societies.
