Happy Day of Silence!

For those of you who are celebrating Day of Silence today. Post here letting us know how its going/ what you plan to do tonight to break the silence.

Here is mine:

Personally, I am at school sitting on the computer during lunch. I have accidently talked four times today already. I have a handmade rainbow shirt on and rainbow shoelaces. i also am carrying some Human Rights Campaign balloons with me from class to class. I currently have no plans on how I will break the silence. So far no one has harassed me today which is wonderful.

So yeah, here are some questions to help you respond to this. You don't have to answer them, but I am personally curious.

1. Has anyone harassed you or tried to trick you into talking?

2. Are you wearing any Day of Silence related gear or gay/bi/trans pride clothing?

3. Did you accidently talk? If so how many times?

4. How do you plan to "break the silence"?

If you have no idea what I am talking about go here:

Everyone has been incredibly thankful for my silence today. Granted, I do attend a liberal arts college, but it hasn't always been known for being the most queer friendly of places.
I work for GLSEN, so I am wearing the official Day of Silence shirt for this year. The front has a picture of a screaming mouth with Day of Silence 2009 on it, and the back says "What are you going to do to end the silence?"
I have not accidentally talked, but it's definitely a task.
A few friends who are participating with me, as well as myself, are going into the rose garden in the arboretum on our campus, holding hands, and screaming as loud as we can to show our solidarity, not only in our silence, but in our noise.

And a happy Day of Silence to you as well!

Thank you for posting about National Day of Silence! This year is my first time participating, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It admittedly hasn't been that hard...I don't have class on Fridays, and I quit my job a few weeks ago...so not too challanging. I'm having a hard time not thanking people- especially the nice ladies that work in our cafe...I also ate my lunch with a few friends, who did note that it was really wierd/hard to have me not talking. We didn't to tshirts...but we did ribbons. I have a black ribbon on because I chose to be silent today, but people who either couldn't be silent or didn't want to are wearing a red ribbon to show their support. I'm also wearing my rainbow-peace-flag shirt. I have not had any problems...but yesterday when manning the official "NDOS table" in our union, we had a few instances.

I wish I could have participated in this, but was involved in an event that required I talk :(.

I'm out of school at this point, but I participated in the day of silence my senior year of high school and was so frustrated with myself when I slipped up and talked at the end of the day! I was at my internship in a library (of all the places to START talking, huh?) and was writing in my trusty notebook to communicate a rather lengthy thought to my librarian. She quipped "Takes a long time, doesn't it?" and I hissed "Yes!" before clapping my hands over my mouth in horror. She laughed and reminded me that she wasn't one of the people who needed to be educated on LGBT issues (even as a middle school librarian in a conservative town she was extremely progressive). I wrote back "but I was doing so good!!!!" and then continued with my original thought.

We also broke the silence by meeting in the cafeteria at the end of the day (it was in the center of the school and lots of people passed through to get to one end of the building or the other). We joined hands in a huge circle - dozens of people had joined the movement, a lot of them spontaneously throughout the day, and yelled and screamed. Then in a moment of spontaneity we started singing 'Amazing Grace.' It was an absolutely beautiful moment, a treasured high school memory for me (one of the few!)

My school was out for vacation this past week, so we are holding our day of silence on the 21st. The tradition at my school is to wear black on DOS and wear rainbows the next day for Pride Day. It is our way of breaking the silence by being louder than usual. There's not much protest against the silent, thankfully, but I know that last year one teacher attempted to make students talk by giving them all Fs for the day. The students (my friends) didn't talk and they got that teacher an official reprimand from the administration.

Not a lot of people harassed me into talking, but a few friends tried. I wore my "Everyone Loves a Bisexual Girl" shirt with a bi-flag on my jeans and hands. And I accendentally talked three times because I had no paper around and my mother sucks a charades. I can't wait to do it next year!
