I know, I know, we're over the Miss California shit. But I watched The Daily Show from two days ago, and Jon Stewart got me going again. (I don't own a television so when I watched this episode on Hulu, it was the first time I'd seen Carrie Prejean on TV.)
So I'll make this short. Is there sexist language shaming Miss California? Yes. Do I feel bad for her? Not really. Because:
1. She has no sympathy for gay rights. And no real logic or argument behind her conviction that two people shouldn't be allowed to marry just because they're the same sex. Her "religious beliefs" don't count, as the bible in its English and Hebrew versions both never mention homosexuality (in fact, Hebrew is the Bible's orginial language and doesn't even have a word that means 'homosexuality,' in our view of word.)
2. She participates in a sexist society. "Beauty" Pagaents are sexist shit that reinfoce cultural norms about women and how women are supposed to look and behave. If you support sexism and patriarchy, then I really don't feel all that bad for you if you suffer from the downside of sexism (ex. slut-calling) in the end.
3. She's a misogynist. For the two above reasons combined, I really would call her a misogynist. (I do think that women can be misogynists. If that's not true, then how do you explain Ann Coulter?)
4. She uses her religious beliefs as a shield to cover her bigotry. I am a religious person, and her bigotry is not a "religious value" of any religion that I know or want to follow. Christianity always taught me to love and accept all people. She's abusing religion.
5. Getting the Donald to stand up for her and say that people only care about her opinion because she's such a hottie. Uhm, no, that's just why she got the microphone in the first place, remember?
And she also stole my name. Augh. Why is it that only bad people are named Carrie?

I actually think Ms. Prejean has been treated unfairly. I do not agree with her position on gay marriage -- but I do not think the attacks on her have been proportionate.
She has the right to her own opinions and her religious beliefs. Her opinion is hardly outlandish ... there are a LOT of people that have made similar statements (President Obama included) and suffered far less. She has been made a scapegoat for anger a Christianity and conservatism, and the attacks on her have been disproportionate to the statement she made.
I simply shudder at the tendency to seek the destruction of someone's life and livelihood because of a political disagreement.

And you don't participate in a sexist society? Really? Nothing you do supports the patriarchy in any way? I'm sorry, but that's bullshit. Everyone participates in a sexist society. So your second point is completely invalid.
iirc, the Bible does mention homosexuality, or at least homosexual acts (I don't think the concept of "homosexuality", as such, existed when it was written). Not as often as fundies seem to think, though (Sodom and Gomorrah were God-nuked for inhospitality, for example, and the Bible itself says this.)
Yes, exactly! Leviticus does say that God is not down with the man on man action but it also says that Goes is not cool with ladies on the rag (even after the rag) and that clothes made with two types of materials are not cool. It says a whole bunch of stuff that even the most fundy of fundamentals on the prayer channel would reject.
I hate how she and many others are claiming her first admendment rights were denied. I'm actually considering doing a short vlog basically saying "Carrie wasn't arrested for her words she was just insulted by blogger. The first admendment doesn't protect you from verbal responses you recieve."
The only attacks on her I've seen - other than slamming her for her stance on gay marriage - have to do with her religious hypocrisy and getting a boob job on the pageant's dime. I don't see that either one has to do with sexual shaming in particular, nor do they seem unfair to me. She used pageant funds to get a boob job, which is, IIRC, some sort of rules violation, and she lied - repeatedly - about posing topless while hiding behind her religion. That's not because she's sexy - that's because she's a scumbag liar and hypocrite. If she wants to pose topless, well, more power to her. But she shouldn't pose topless while telling other people (implicitly) that they shouldn't, and lying about the fact that she did - seriously.
Agreed. Biblical injunctions for 'modest clothing' in women are far more numerous than biblical injunctions about homosexuality... if you're going to condemn things because the Bible tells you so, don't only condemn things that don't affect YOU. If you excuse me, I'm going to be picketing the nearest shellfish restaurant...
I might feel sorry for her if she'd given her opinion and left it at that. But, she's gone out of her way to be a spokesperson for the anti-gay marriage movement.
I love how she's claiming that her First Admendment rights were trampled on. And Obama did say the same thing as she, which angers me also. He's not nearly as progressive as I had hoped.
By that logic, it's totally okay to sexually harass Hooters waitresses, or rape porn actresses.
Awww, Carrie White was pretty cool, at least I was rooting for her. And Carrie Fisher was Princess Leia, right?
As for Carrie Prejean, she's a homophobe. That's all I know about her, and that's all I need to hear. I don't see why I should feel bad for people who oppose marriage equality, why did something else happen with her?
I feel I would have to stand up against any sexist insults that came her way, even though I disagree with her political an religious beliefs, feel she's abusing her influence, and think beauty pageants are horrible. My reason for this is that she is still a woman, and sexist attacks are still unfair. Attack her for her actions, but not for her chromosomes.
It's a little like the Geneva Convention. Just because someone is your moral opposite doesn't mean they deserve inhuman treatment.
well i have to disagree with you, because there is no real logic behind any religious beliefs, and if christianity has always taught you to 'love and accept all people', then i am afraid you must have skipped large sections of the bible. that is, presuming you have read it at all.
according to the bible: jesus fulfilled the rules of the old testament when he sacrificed himself. christians are no longer required to follow the rules in the old testament. yes, there are passages in the new testament, but they are all in the epistles which were included in the bible later - there are no passages against homosexuality in the gospels at all because jesus never said anything about homosexuality.

I feel bad for her. She did not have to be treated the wasy she was treated. This is America. She whould be able to say what she wants. If she says "races shouldn't mix", then who cares? I don't. She's just a Beauty Queen.
