I hate that this is even a debatable issue. Gay marriage is a human rights issue, not a matter of personal opinion.
There are a number of quotes related to this cause that are becoming very well known like; “If you don’t agree with gay marriage, do not marry a gay person”. It gets the point across that these are human rights not straight people rights. In other words, it really doesn’t hurt people to have gay marriage exist, however, it certainly does when you deny people a right another group of people has access to. That is blatant discrimination!
The fact that you are religious does NOT give you the right to spread hate under the guise of freedom of speech. You are a bigot! Hate crimes and related comments should not be covered under the US constitution in any situation.
This post is a result of the Prop 8 decision being upheld by the California Supreme Court and because of Miss California’s response to Perez .

Yeah, I've got to wonder a bit about some of these reactions. I mean, I would think that the proponents of same-sex marriage would make it clear that they don't want to punish churches for not allowing such a procedure to occur within their church, so I'm not sure where that myth is coming from. As for the free speech issue--what, exactly, do you want to say that would be prohibited by the allowance of this procedure?
It's a bit like the hate crime bill that came through a little while ago. People who oppose that--you have to wonder what it is exactly they want to do that would suddenly become illegal...
exactly! i get so heated when people say, "well, i personally dont agree with it." good for you! dont marry a queer! this is a basic civil human right. i fear that the movement will not - and cannot - advance until we hammer this point home. denying marriage rights to some for a rather arbitrary reason is a stain on our country.
FINALLY someone said it!!! I couldnt agree with you more!
I just had a conversation about it with my aunt the other day - after the horrible news of prop 8 in California...she said she was GLAD! I just looked at her and didn't say much.
Then she "explains" herself by saying that she is a born again christian and a conservative. She supports the idea that they should be recognized as couples...but just not get married. Then at the end of the conversation, she added that she has gay friends. Which I kind of think she just added for my sake.
Hell to the yeah! How ridiculous is it that conservatives advocate for less government involvement in peoples' personal lives, and yet are for infringement upon one of the most personal ceremonies of all? It's just like you said, if you don't like gay marriage, don't have one. If you don't want to see gay people getting married, don't go to a gay wedding.
And I hate all this bullshit about, "Well, the majority voted for it, so it's fair!" Um, yeah, the majority by, what was it again, two percent? Not to mention, the majority isn't automatically the be-all-end-all of what's right versus what's wrong. I'm sure that 200 years ago, The Majority was fiercely opposed to interracial marriage, and women voting, and African Americans owning property, but nowadays we realize that it's preposterous to deny people such basic rights. Hopefully 50 years down the line (or less), our grandkids and great-grandkids will be gaping and saying, "Wait, gay people couldn't get married back then?!"
