Hello World,
I am new to this website, and would like to introduce myself to the community. I believe absolutely in human rights, and that includes women. As a woman, I recognize that we have had to fight for every right that we currently have. What it means to be a woman is decided for us by our families, our communities, and our society. Advertising, through the media tell us what we should look like, and how we should act. It is only in the last century that we have had any control over our own bodies. What health care is available to us is still largely determined by male legislators and judges. As a retired health care worker, I can still remember when a woman could not have a tubal ligation without her husband's consent.
I was 16 years old when the first oral birth control pill (Enovid) became available. I went to a Dr and told him I wanted the "freedom pill", and he gave it to me. Many years have passed since then, hence my online name "vieja", Spanish for old woman. I found the Feministing site serendipitously about a week ago. What a wealth of information, and space to be whatever I want! Thank You

I know! That's what I thought when I found this place, too.
