Katie Couric has a fan. He is gay. And he has a radio show.
So his co-workers arranged for Couric to call in to speak to him while he was on the air. And that's when she said the following:
I am confused about this statement for two reasons. For one, Katie Couric is FAMOUS. She is a household name. And yet she is desperate for fans? And secondly, this statement seems to imply that she wants fans of the straight and narrow persuasion - in terms of anatomy, sexuality and gender identity - but is willing to take fans that blur those lines, even though they're less desirable, because she's that desperate.
Classy.

I'm hoping it was a joke in poor taste, but I think the "I'll take anybody at this point" is a reference to her well-publicized ratings woes on CBS nightly news. See, e.g., http://www.observer.com/2009/media/closer-look-cbs-evening-news-historically-low-ratings
"For whatever reason, I have some gay fans."
Wow. "For whatever reason"? It's like she's surprised that gay people are allowed to be fans of somebody who isn't a drag queen or a lumberjack.
And what's with the hermaphrodite comment? Apparently people who don't fit neatly into the gender binary are the scum of the earth, but good thing Katie has a heart as big as all outdoors and will tolerate them. *rolls eyes*
This just in: Many famous people in the media got their jobs because they are attractive and can read the words someone with an earned journalism degree puts on a teleprompter without stuttering!
For more on this late-breaking development we go to every other talking-head on every channel out there!
I don't read her comment that way. Perhaps she's just surprised and honestly pleased. I Didn't hear the interview, but based on the statement you posted, I wouldn't read more into it than a public figure expressing that she is flattered by her fans of all shapes and sizes. Then again, I tend to give the beneift of the doubt...
I agree with Lance. If you saw her interview with Jon Stewart awhile back, he gave her a hard time about how her fans were dying off because they're so old. I think the joke came off as condescending, but I think she's just excited to have a few fans who aren't in the 90-150 age range.
I'm inclined to believe she's more of an idiot than an actual functioning bigot.
