Sexism in the Australian Music Industry

Triple J, an Australian music station, has recently hosted a countdown "Hottest 100 of all Time". Listeners call up and vote for their favourite songs (you can pick a maximum of ten) and these votes were tallied and played through the week.

As the list was slwoly revealed, a disturbing trend began to appear. There were no women. None.

In the entire top 100, there were two female vocalists, both guest vocalists for Massive Attack, and five bands with female members. But no female artists, and no female fronted bands.

No Garbage, no Bjork, no Janis Joplin, no Joan Jett... the list goes on.

A lot of people have been asking: why? Honestly, I don't have any good answers, aside from a societal absense of women in the media when it comes to rock. One thing that JJJ is brushing off is Triple J's History of Music, best summed up here. Females were grossly underrepresented in this list, and it was this list that a lot of people took their cues from when voting.

Check out this site for a thourough breakdown of the entire debacle, and check out the links she posts at the end for different thoughts.

For Triple J's response, sorely lacking in my opinion, check out the Hack podcast.

In response, GirlieJones has launched Female Appreciation Month on livejournal, and is currently asking for submissions for favourite female artists. Even if you don't wish to make a submission, there is now a huge collection of brilliant female artists on the site which should be checked out.

The Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) administers the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), which governs retirement plans (including profit-sharing and 401(k) plans) and welfare plans (including health, disability, and life insurance plans). ERISA also includes the health coverage continuation and portability provisions of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This information sheet focuses on job loss and its effect on workers’ health benefits and retirement benefits. The United States should be planning for a possible second round of fiscal stimulus to further prop up the economy after the $787 billion rescue package launched in February, an adviser to President Barack Obama said. Wage restraint remains one of the main hopes for rectifying Britain’s budget deficit, despite opposition to a pay freeze from public sector unions. These days, almost anytime someone borrows to fund a business, buy a car or get a mortgage, the debt gets repackaged into a security that can be bought or sold like a stock. But critics say abuses in the securitization market helped bring about the housing meltdown. Consumerism and materialism have been the new religions in this country for years. The Making Home Affordable Modification program has a $75 billion commitment to support payday loan store modifications so that up to 3 to 4 million borrowers at risk of foreclosure can keep their homes.
