Swimming Pool Racism In Philadelphia
My boyfriend sent me the link to this article about children who were allegedly (and most likely) banned from a private swim club that advertised open membership because they're black.
The best quote, from the most idiotic PR man to walk this earth:
"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club," John Duesler , President of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement.
The complexion? Really? These sorts of stories remind me how dishearteningly far we have to go...

Holy shit. It confounds me when people feel comfortable and justified in their racists and practices. I hope the national media picks this up and runs with it. The club deserves the modern equivalent of three days in the stocks.
I went through the comments in the artical and tried to flag everything I could, but I got so disgusted after three pages I had to stop. I would like to say that I am shocked that this happened but unfortunatly im not, it proves how far this country still needs to go. And that this happened to children..not that it would be any better if it happened to adults, but children are less equiped to deal with these things than adults, these poor kids.
If I had been there I would have brought them all to my pool, after flipping out at the residents that were so discriminating.. These people as far as I understand could sue becasue of this aswell. The pool has a policy of accepting everyone in. They obviously violated this policy, and there are many witnesses to prove it. As well as anti-discrimination laws. I truely hope a suit is filed against the bussiness, this is unconscionable.
Thankfully its already getting some attention. Sen Specter is reportedly looking into the allegations, stating
"The allegations against the swim club as they are reported are extremely disturbing," Specter said in a statement. "I am reaching out to the parties involved to ascertain the facts. Racial discrimination has no place in America today."
Make that a lot of attention. I just saw it featured on the comcast news website.
I'm not surprised. Had it been a few (like literally 2 or 3) black kids it probably would have turned out differently. But I've seen this scenario too often to simply not be surprised about this.
How humiliating it must have been for the one or two black or mixed kids that might have be swimming with the white kids when this happened. Oh I bet there were one or two. I used to be that kid, lol.
The kids did, however, get a new place to swim because of the uproar about this story. It doesn't fix everything, but it's nice to know that people are willing to step up and help!

Oh, thanks. I've been pissed off about this since I read it. Mostly because I know that area-and boy oh boy, do they have their entitled heads up their privileged asses-I can't imagine what would make someone SAY that, about a KID...jeez...
I'm glad they get to swim somewhere. No public pools in Philadelphia:(
I read about this on FARK of couple of days back, and emailed the club about my sadness at their overt racism.
No response, obviously.
It makes your head hurt seeing this. You shouldn't have to worry about shielding your kids in this day and age, not like this.
I saw a political cartoon about this topic the other day. Actually, I'll go find it right now.

I am so concerned about these children. It is horrible that anyone could get away with doing something like this, especially to children who are so young and impressionable. This reminds me of a story a close friend told me that happened to her when she was about four years old. She is a child of a biracial family and has an older sister who was about eight at the time, her family was going shopping and two women were walking in back of them and said "oh my god, look at those children they look so disgusting, they arent black or white". Even though this happened years ago she still remembers it and it still effects her today. I hate to think how this is affecting these children and their families.

OH FUCK YOU you damn Troll!
I grew up in Chicago, south Chicago, and let me tell you, the only thing holding that neighborhood was gangs. And yeah, we dealt with it. You want to change that kinda of thing try and get you head out of your ass and start a neighborhood watch or something, don't blame it on race. Oh, and it would do you real well to check your classist and raciest privilege before you post here again, we don't deal with that shit.
the post was deleted, thanks Jess., and move along commenters :)
