I've been haunting feministing for a while and wanted to write something profound (at least for me) as my first post. However, I've been following last weekend's Conservative Value Voter's Summit and found Lila Rose, a right-wing, anti-abortion activist, calling for abortions to be performed in public squares.
"If I could insist--this might sound a little strange. If I could insist as long as they are legal in our nations, abortions in public square, until we are so sick and tired of seeing them that we would do away with the injustice all together. Maybe then we would value the unborn child as we value the one year old child, just learning to walk. And maybe then, we might hear angels singing, when we ponder the glory of conception."
For those of you who don't know: Lila Rose is a student-activist at UCLA and founder of LiveAction.org.

What? Do they get to use coathangers too?
My apologies in advance for what follows---this is a tad graphic.
One of the most powerful statements against the criminalization of abortion for me is found in the original 1966 film Alfie, whereby Alfie's latest sexual conquest (and married woman) has become pregnant. Michael Caine's character finds a grim-faced, sweating abortionist to perform the procedure, who before getting started soberly informs the both of them that in doing what he is about to do he risks significant jail time. Going to an office or a place outside of the home would have been too risky, so the abortion transpires inside Alfie's apartment.
After inducing the abortion, the man quickly leaves, while imploring that if the unfortunate woman sweats from the procedure she is to take the pills that he has left behind just in case. The poor woman undergoes great pain as a result of the process and Alfie himself nearly faints from seeing the now discharged fetus floating in a tub of warm water.
Certainly I think if more people saw the process of abortion, in my opinion, they would be more inclined to sympathize with women who choose to have them and those who perform them, not the other way round.
You know, somehow I don't think that conception is the reason why I hear Angels singing....I think it's just my orgasm. :)
". And maybe then, we might hear angels singing, when we ponder the glory of conception."
I think this women has been playing the Sims game too long. (I know this isn't really a comment, but I just had to say it)
If we did appendectomies in the public square, we'd probably be sick and tired of seeing them too. There's a reason medical procedures aren't done in public.
Pretty much what I was thinking (not to mention sanitary concerns). Why not do blood transfusions too, since the JWs are against them. Lets also toss in sterilization, to piss off the Catholics. And just for fun (and to mess with PIT--erm, I mean, PETA), every Wednesday lets turn the town square into a cattle slaughterhouse, followed by free barbeque.
It's like your parents having sex. Regardless of your personal opinions on the action, it's not something you want to have to watch.
I was thinking "live births" instead of appendectomies, but yeah, same idea. Live births are bloody and terrifying (in addition to miraculous, but you kind of have to be in the moment to feel that part).
She does realize that a significant portion of abortions consists of a woman taking a pill, right?
Are you kidding? She's a pro-lifer. She probably thinks that most abortions consist of inducing early delivery and sticking scissors in the back of the babies head.
That's what happens when you blindly believe without fact-checking.
How about vasectomies in the public square?
Since we have so many public squares, where we congregate and form community, we might as well put them to a good use. Maybe we can add some stocks, too.
It would be all about the public shaming for her. I'm sure she's never seen an actual abortion, just the anti-abortionists "real facts" and pictures, but it is not that interesting.
I watched this the other day. Ugh. I showed it to my friend and he said "Okay fine, but she has to shit in public from now on"
Conservatives get to demonstrate in the public square, maybe we should make them stand around talking all day until we're so sick and tired of seeing them that we do away with their injustice?
hey maybe she's onto something. but at the same time we should have public executions for rapists as well. Then we can get rid of that injustice too
Rebekah,
People would pay to see that.
How about conception in the public square? Now that I would go see.
It really baffles me that women can actually feel this way.
Listening to 50+ Caucasion, conservative men have these ridiculous opinions is one thing. But to hear a young woman with same views on something that could potentially affect her life, and that of her future daughter's is absolutely ridiculous to me.
Performing abortions in a public square? Are you kidding me? This goes back to the old addage that feminists enjoy abortions. Do these right-winged Conservatives not realize that abortion is usually a last resort? That it's an emotionally painful, and often times traumatizing process? Most women don't simply get abortions on whims because it's such a good time...I mean, seriously.
