I'm not sure if anyone else has posted about this; I searched the site and think no one has but I'm sort of clumsy about those things. Anyway!
So those of you with Firefox probably know about the little sidebar in the upper right corner, the one that allows you to search for things on Google without directly accessing the site. And if you know about that you probably also know that it often suggests searches based on the first few letters you type (type fem and a menu drops down saying "fema, female dog names (! seriously), etc).
Well, the other day my friend pointed out that when you type "penil" you get all sorts of penis related items: penile implant, penile fracture, penile prosthesis, and so on. BUT type "vagin" or "vagina" and nothing comes up!
Why?!
I'm not sure if this is the work of Firefox or Google, but it has me totally puzzled.

To be fair, the word "penis" itself also doesn't drop down. The toolbar is mostly based on how often the phrase is searched, then apparently filtered for appropriateness or something. I can't imagine that there aren't plenty of people searching "penis" and "vagina," so it must have decided that those words were inappropriate, but "penile" was not. Very weird, but I'd say more arbitrarily sex-phobic than sexist.
Yep. As MarySophia says, Google autocomplete filters words that are likely to be part of searches for pornography. There is no drop down for vagina, penis, anus or anal, as well as terms that are considered more genuinely pornographic such as cock, tits or cum.
The reason for this, as near as I can tell, is because the drop down field, when active, displays the most common searches based off of what you've typed so far. Presumably, the most common searches that include the words vagina and penis are pornographic in nature, so if those words weren't filtered out, you'd see a drop down list of NSFW searches.
I don't even necessarily think that it is because Google is sex-phobic, but rather because their engine is utilized by all age groups. They've integrated filtering of results of course (so if safe search is active and you search for "vagina" you won't get porn) but presumably there are parents who would be up in arms if the autocomplete function suggested obscene search completions when little Susie or Billy typed in a basic anatomical term.
Good point. I didn't really think about phrases being pornographic beyond just the word.
Weird. I just did the same thing both with the toolbar and on the Google site and I got all the way to the end of the word vagina without it popping up anything. I went even further and got all the way to the end of "vagina monologues", just to see what would happen, and it still didn't pop up anything, and that had 778,000 search results! But to be fair, "penis enlargement" also didn't pop up and it has 3,320,000 results.
I don't have any of the safe search features turned on. Quite bizarre.
On a side note, while putting in random terms to see what would filter out, I discovered Black & Decker has some sort of home appliance called a BDSM400. o.O
clit and clitoris do generate a drop down list on mine.
Me too.
Maybe because clits don't tend to be featured prominently in porn (if at all) the way penises and vaginas do... what a shame!!
Tell me again, why are we using Google to search for body parts? Often, people do that at bars.
On another note: I think looking at Google search results can give quite an indication of society and gender. In fact, I think it might be a good idea for a senior thesis!
I bet that, although "vagina" is not on the drop down menu, "pussy" is. Now, use just that for an essay on comprehensive sex ed vs. objectification of women, or separating women from their body parts, as a society often does.
On "penis enlargement," one can almost write an essay on its own about society's focus on heteronormative sex, and porn culture's obsession over penis size.
But that's just my over-thinking brain, with three Red Bulls, at 8:50 in the morning.
I bet that, although "vagina" is not on the drop down menu, "pussy" is.
Nope. Neither of them.
