Violence Against Women in TV raised over 100 percent to 400 percent

This was actually a quite decent report on yahoo to my surprise (but not surprised it didn't make the "over exposed celebrity teens" on the top five highlighted articles of the day...).

I laughed at the end where he says "It's the parents fault" and saying its just some "way to fit their own ideas". We'll, usually I would agree but how is wanting to lessen the image of violence against women and young girls an "idea". I'm sure if it concerned the violence against "blacks" or whatever color, the president would say "We have grown as a society to know not to take THAT seriously, but we will make steps to improve that image." (Bullshit usually) Interesting the president didn't even try to fluff it, he just plain out said "Psh, no I want my ratings and I don't care if your kid happens to be watching a show that depicts violence against women, who cares" sort of thing. The reporter also pointed out Fox being the main offender. Ha.

I'm sort of iffy that the reporter may have left out some key quotes as usual, as well as the two sources being male. What about the women in the media--I'm sure SHE has something to say about it on either side. No no, let a guy answer he's the boss.

Don't be mistaken, I am against most censorship, but where is the line now a days?

What could be done about this?

Well, to be fair to the quote at the end, the PTC is notoriously conservative and uber-Christian - they have called shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Everwood dangerous because Buffy has the whole occult thing and Everwood - gasp - has Jewish people on it but no Christians. They've come down on the show Saving Grace, which is rated TV-MA and airs at 10pm. They don't advocate for parents making informed choices and monitoring what their kids watch, they want this stuff GONE.

So that is the context in which this study is being looked at. It really makes me dislike having to give them props for looking at the trends in violence against women on TV, because it's an important thing to look at.

When it comes to shows such as Bones and CSI, where the plot each week revolves around dead people, I have to wonder if violence against women specifically has gone up, or if the success of procedural crime shows is masking that it's simply violence that's gone up.

It continually stuns me that people take anything that happens on Family Guy seriously.

I don't watch much TV, so I don't know what types of shows are responsible for the increase. But if it's in large part due to crime dramas, another perspective on it would be that the writers of those shows are actually taking violent crimes against women seriously enough to develop episodes around them. The thing that makes any kind of unjust treatment of people really prevalent is when no one outside of those directly affected thinks about it. You can't watch CSI or whatever without having this subject placed front and center before you.

As for the argument that shows like this normalize such violence... it seems to me that violence is already normal. Showing bad guys getting busted for committing those acts may be a net positive compared to not putting such situations on TV at all.

How can a true feminist NOT? This is one of the highest rated tv shows out there and it DOES affect how the youth acts.
As you said, you dont watch much tv so how could you possibly have a credited opinion on it?
I watch tv as most teenagers and it's saturated with sexism and hate against women.
Lois is usually almost killed by Stewey who occasionally calls her a bitch, Meg is deemed unvalueable to her family cause she is "ugly" or "not hot".
Taking shows like this not seriously concerns me.

Maybe if you watched what the majoirity of America does, you'll see that it's disturbing and sad that its considered funny.

The PTC is right-wing, Christian fundamentalist propaganda. I would strongly advise against taking their 'studies' seriously.

Haha, wow. Thats what I felt at first, that they wanted to simply get rid of it all, but I took a more critical look at the article.
But the fact that I myself have noticed how much more lenient tv is getting (no warnings or anything) on channels that many kids watch. Cartoon network for example has a lot of crazy stuff that I was stunned to watch

I find this very interesting. Feminists say that they strive for gender equality, but why do feminists not complain about violence against men on TV. For decades there have been scenes on TV of men being shot, blown up, an what have you. So tell me, why is it considered sexist when there is violence against women, but it is not considered sexist when there is violence against men?
