Why is everyone so up in arms about Kate Moss's motto? She just likes to be skinny, leave her alone.

[0+] Author Profile Page Anita replied to Will :

Yes, she likes to be skinny. That is what she wants out of her life. I agree, we should probably leave her, as a person, alone.

However, do you realize how much of a role model she is? Women and girls look up to her and other celebrities hoping that if they change this ONE aspect of themselves they can feel like a part of royalty. In this sense being skinny, thinking that this is the best thing at a woman could possibly feel, is harmful. It perpetuates cultural standards of thin is better than not thin. Thusly leading to more eating disorders and disordered life.

But then, you could turn it around--if Kate Moss were obese and stated that being fat was the best thing that could possibly be. Is that still as harmful? Yes. Harmful to herself and others.

A drug-taking role model? Really?

[0+] Author Profile Page Anita replied to paper tiger :

I'm confused by this. Elaborate please.

What I'm getting at is that she is far from being a role model. I don't think she has any influence over anyone. It's beside the point anyway, as I think this is all a non-issue, but claiming her as some influential role model to women is an exaggeration, in my opinion.

[0+] Author Profile Page Nettle Syrup replied to paper tiger :

Maybe saying she's a role model for all women is an exaggeration, but Kate Moss is an absolute ICON for young girls who want to be seriously underweight. These pro-ana websites go crazy over Kate Moss and Keira Knightley. That's not their fault, but they grasp onto comments like that and use them as 'thinspiration' mottos. Just check a few of them out.

I wasn't aware of these pro-ana websites actually, so thanks for that.

But the problem really lies somewhere else, and not with Kate Moss. Surely wanting to be dangerously skinny is down to some deep rooted psychological/physical problems. These pro-ana people will find 'thinspiration' anywhere, I would've thought. Or is this a phenomenon only based on modern media's obsession with being slim?

[0+] Author Profile Page Nettle Syrup replied to paper tiger :

Well, there's always been eating disorders, but it was once extremely rare and is now not rare at all, an epidemic in fact. Just a short look at history will show how it's increased with media. There was a study on Fiji where Anne Becker interviewed 30 young women before it came under the influence of western media, and then after 'Western' TV was introduced. In only about 3 years' time, the girls were saying things like 'I want to be thin because the girls on TV are thin, and if you're fat you won't have friends.' There were then many more cases of anorexia and self-induced vomiting to lose weight. Yeah, there's problems with research and confirmation bias and all that, but this seems like a good study and you'd have to be pretty dim to deny the connection. Sure, there are other reasons people become anorexic, like genes, but these things very, very rarely manifest without the influence of a thin-obsessed media. That's not to say everyone anorexic is shallow or stupid, in fact it has been shown that people with eating disorders are often the intelligent ones - the fact is, all the successful and likeable characters on TV are thin, and women and girls want to be successful and likeable. And if they are ambitious and determined, they are likely to do everything to the best of their ability, which is where dieting can get out of hand.

[0+] Author Profile Page Anita replied to Nettle Syrup :

Thank you. That was what I was trying to get at. In no means is Kate Moss a positive role model. It is her view on life that makes those with eating disorders look up to her as a role model (from their perspective), for "thinspiration". Dangerous.

[0+] Author Profile Page Gopher replied to paper tiger :

When I was in middle school if they took drugs it made them even more appealing.

Hmm I guess I find it hard empathising because I was never one to have solid role models growing up, didn't watch TV and feel nauseous whenever I hear the word 'celebrity', so I'm downplaying the amount of influence modern media has on young girls in my mind.

In this case, then yes, I can see now why what Kate Moss said was irresponsible if it is exactly these sorts of women that pro-ana communities follow.

At the same time I feel as if we are really pouncing on her - I'm trying to imagine being in her shoes. I would like to think I would learn from the reactions and move on, but I get a nasty impression of from some of the comments here. As a naturally skinny woman, I just felt a little taken aback at the bitchiness.

[0+] Author Profile Page Jamie replied to paper tiger :

I can totally understand, if you're naturally skinny - and I know, from friends' experiences, that you guys have it as tough sometimes as others.

But, from the perspective of someone who is plus sized (and I am NOT ashamed of that), the shit that you guys get is from jealousy, but mostly you guys are still treated like people. As someone who is obese, I am treated differently than I was seven years ago when I was a "normal" size. It is frustrating and insulting.

You have to understand, as I'm sure you do, that most people are not naturally skinny, and trying to be so is often dangerous. The fact that this woman is flaunting her skinniness, natural or not, is offensive when it comes to those struggling with body image - it is a punch in the face. It is one thing to be comfortable in your skin; it is quite another to promote unhealthy practices in order to "be skinny." What's more, there is a lack of reality in this picture - celebrities like Kate Moss don't live in the "real" world. They have personal trainers, nutritionists, chefs, and endless time - nothing but time - to work out and eat their calorie-free food which has been perfectly prepared for them without an ounce of thought or effort. Real people don't have this leisure - they have to work and manage stressful schedules, struggling to fit in preparing meals and working out. It is their JOB to be "pretty" and we forget this. That is, I think, the most pressing issue.

Oh, crap. I already told two people I loved them before I saw your post, so I can't tell you I love you, but, wow - roast beef sandwiches from Arby's??????

I LOVE, and I mean absolutely love, drenching the Arby's sauce on there, and kick it up with a bit of horseradish sauce on a sandwich with extra roast beef - as everything just fucking EXPLODES in my mouth, beef flavors going through my nostrils, the buns are now falling apart, and as a result, beef slices fall everything, with the drippings of the sauces on them!

Totally HEAVENLY! God, I miss, miss, miss Arby's.

Clearly, I love food a bit too much at times ...

Oh my God, POMEGRANATES! Best fruit EVER! Love.

also, earth balance is my favorite vegan margarine but even i can't believe it's not butter or the store's generic brand are usually vegan.

and there is an endless supply of milk alternatives. soy, almon, hemp, oat, rice. one for every occasion. i usually just get whatever is on sale but in my experience rice tastes best on cereal and soy is good in cooking.

[0+] Author Profile Page rebekah replied to clementine :

thanks for a long time my friends and I would buy the vegan desserts from our local grocery store (our local branch of the chain store is owned by a vegan and she sees to it that everyone can get a taste of what she eats regularly) but one of our friends has recently been diagnosed with celiac's disease and can no longer eat anything with gluten in it.

I'm sorry, but I find this post entirely unnecessary and find of upsetting for reasons I outlined in the post made on the main forum this morning.

This kind of thing is triggering and insensitive to people suffering with eating disorders. It's along the line of "eat a sandwich" rhetoric.

Kate Moss has and is part of a structural system of thin privilege. What about mental health privilege?

Yes, we should be critical of her statement and challenging social structures that contribute to her celebrity and to eating disorders, but is this kind of post really helpful?

[0+] Author Profile Page rebekah replied to voluptuouspanic :

I agree that anorexic and bulimic women need to hear more than just the "eat a sandwich" rhetoric. Eating disorders are a type of mental illness and the women who suffer from them need help. From other women, from their doctors, from psychiatrists, and from survivors of the disorder. But, I think that it goes a long way toward stopping very young girls, who see comments like this and are ashamed of eating, to create lists like this. We focus too much on being thin, and not enough on being healthy. I think we should all have a list of reminders of the foods we enjoy eating that will allow us to forget about our weight, and focus on nourishing our bodies.

[0+] Author Profile Page Nettle Syrup replied to voluptuouspanic :

I agree the 'just eat' line is not constructive at all. But to say we shouldn't write posts celebrating liberation from a patriarchal ideal of thinness and 'beauty' is a bit much. It's like saying no one should write about their relief at having had an abortion because it might be triggering to women who can't have children. Or vice versa.

Making a list of foods you think "taste better than skinny feels" is not at all comparable to writing about the experience of having an abortion.

I also don't see how this list is a celebration of liberation. This post is linked to a whole discussion that has been happening on this site that I am questioning.

But for what it's worth, no one is slamming anyone for not eating, but rather, sharing their love and interests for food.

One can an anti-objectification of women stand, but still write about things they like about sex. This is simply the same concept.

On another note, and I seriously mean this, I WOULD SO COOK FOR ALL OF YOU!

Feminism and food. It's just ...the stuff dreams are made of.

[0+] Author Profile Page rebekah replied to Marc :

food is what holds our society together. We associate it with comfort and and familiarity. I think that because it is the one thing that all cultures understand it brings our world together. See for me, I think the "thin culture" that our media perpetuates is a way for them to maintain control not only over what we put in our bodies, but also its a way to keep our country separate from all the others It's the idea that if we try and attack the one of the only things that can transcend cultural differences, we are going to be able to attack one of the only ways to appreciate another culture. We learn a lot about other parts of the world through the food that we eat. It's that simple. Plus hungry people are grumpy people and what better way to prove that women are overly emotional than to starve them, thus making them angry and emotional.

[0+] Author Profile Page runningnerd replied to voluptuouspanic :

As someone who has struggled with anorexia, it is more than food tasting good. I love to eat. Even in my most eating disordered state, I could come up with a huge list of food I'd rather be eating than starving myself. And then I would have probably burst into tears and drunk a glass of water to fill myself up.

There's no point in listing everything that tastes better than being skinny except to remind people struggling with a disorder just how disordered and miserable they are.

I think the post is helpful to women who have not struggled with serious eating disorders. However, of course I'm sorry that it is triggering to people who have eating disorders, and I can see how. At the same time, I think the target audience is much broader than that, and we shouldn't forget that all women are affected in some way by unrealistic body image issues. So we can share the experience to some degree.

No one on the feministing community is trying to tell you that you're disordered and miserable; it was done in a light-hearted spirit.

Be well.

Warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

Clams Casino.

Oh, geez, folks - it's damn 9:30 in the morning, and you've got my ass starving.

1) A dirty - extremely dirty martin, or maybe 5. The smell makes you breathe deeper to take in the salty brine with burning smell of the vodka or gin. Add a good conversation to the mix and you'll be swaying within ten minutes.

2) Medium rare steaks with a nicely baked potatoes drenched with butter. The first bite of a good steak is like the first kiss - your tongue dances and your heart flutters as you taste the salty, tender piece of meat falling apart in your mouth. Add some breadsticks and you've made me very happy.

3) Tongue tacos - the most amazing, wonderful things in the world, with some cilandro and chopped onions on top, with a dab of guacamole, and a squeeze of lime.

4) Fried chicken - nothing like the crunchy skin, spicy white meat, and the steam all combined together, and the heat quelled by sweet, sweet iced teas.

5) Boiled crab - with the roe still in tact, and the taste of the sea on your tongue as you take a bite into the sweet, flaky meat. No melted butter here, please.

6) Pho. Growing up in Southern California, this beef noodle soup was the staple of my family's Saturday morning outings - fatty, tender pieces of beef, cooked in beef bone with spices for up to 12 hours, then thrown on the bed of white noodle with piping hot stock, add some vegies and you've got yourselves a meal.

7) A hot bowl of chili - the real chili, not the kind of crap you get at the supermarket to put on your baby siblings' hot dogs. Real chili comes with no beans - and the only garnish it needs to spunk up the spicy, beefy flavor is some onions. No cheese, nothing nothing else. A few bottles of Corona with it, and I am in heaven. Indication of a good bowl of chili? Specks of red peppers can be seen on the pieces of meat. God.

8)A nice, fatty piece of corned beef simmered with sauerkraute in the crock pot about 10 hours, cooked in its own fat and juices, along with half a can of dark beer to bring out the flavor. Don't even attempt to cut it, because after 10 hours, you can simply take it apart with your fork.

The steam still rising, the meat still pink from it inside because of its natural color, and next to you preparing the dishes for a meal is a friend, lover, or someone who doesn't give a damn about your weight, but rather, you've got good food!

9) Watermelon. I miss a lot of food from the States - but one thing I don't miss is watermelon, because here, watermelon is available throughout the year. The refreshing, sweet, sandy taste of a seedless watermelon as it's getting bitten into, the juices explode in all kinds of direction in your mouth. It's just ...heavenly. It's like biting into natural sugared water, still so fresh and tasty - with just the right amount of sweetness.

10) Cheesecake: New York, Chocolate, pumpkin pie - if it's a cheesecake, it's for me! I love the smooth, cold, and in the right case, tart taste of a cheesecake, stuck on the roof of my mouth, as it richness mixes and melts in my mouth. If kept cold enough, the chunky texture greets you at the first bite, but immediately gets squished by your dancing tongue ...oh, God ...now I am hungry.

How the hell did this turn into a damn novel/food erotica for me? Lunch is going to be wonderful today. :)

[0+] Author Profile Page rebekah replied to Marc :

when do you get back from your tour?

The latest projected date is February 14. But as I understand, we're looking at 1 or 2 February. So, it'll be fun!

Man, I can't wait to get bome and throw shit in the crockpot before I go to work in the morning, and coming home to a good, healthy meal, and bringing people over and cooking for them! It'll be like a family, except they have to leave at night!

Marc

I'll bet. My dad always said when he would come back that the best part of being back home was getting to go into the freezer pull out a bag of green chile and making something with it. I'll be sending good thoughts your way. Good luck on the remainder of your mission.

Veggie Dogs from a small local family owned restaurant that offers vegetarian options of just about everything as well as vegan options b/c they have vegan buns. Seriously, a veggie chili cheese dog always made my day and after I became a regular they would usually give me extra fries. I hope they keep veggie-bacon in stock now because when I go back to visit I soooooo want the Heart-Attack Dog (a hot dog loaded with chili, onion wrings, bacon and some other fried goodness/badness). It appears nowhere sells veggie dogs here and when I buy them from the store they don't even match what this restaurant offered. And that even with the extra charges for vegetarian options I could still get a hot dog with chili cheese fries and a drink for under 5 was extra-cool.

As you can tell I miss this place with all get out and actually look forward to visiting this restaurant almost just as much as I do my friends.
