Feminist Portraits

I am a digital painter, and I’ve got two projects in mind that I want to work with.

One, which I’ve come to Feministing with before, was the concept of pin up and if that could be turned into something feminist. I’m still going to pursue that route, but I’d also like to have something more photo-realistic  on the side — which is why I want to paint prominent feminists in the world. Ideally these people aren’t necessarily the face of feminism, such as Gloria Stenium. A good example, and what will probably be my first project, will be a portrait of Lisa Edelstein (aka Cuddy from House), who is apparently pro-choice, and I didn’t know that (although I love her character). See here.

Also, Mariska Hargitay is another woman I’d like to paint. I’ll also paint Kathy Griffin after reading her book, and witnessing the whole pap smear thing.

I would greatly appreciate any other suggestions. I am having a huge brain fart. : )

Sounds like a good project! So you want people who are feminist “but not necessarily the face of feminism” – how about maybe portraits of strong woman artists, writers, and musicians you admire? Or maybe something like depictions of the women who demonstrated in Tahrir Square and such–I’m sure there are images like that online.

I think I remember you writing of your interest in pin-up and such before – how about a portrait of the recently passed Tura Satana? Though many people primarily think of her as a glamourous Russ Meyer actress, she actually had to overcome a lot of racism and sexual violence early in her life. I’ve done a write up here, with some links and footage:
