Hello, skater girl
It’s been a tough year for women’s skateboarding. With the elimination of numerous women’s divisions of major skating contests, including the X Games women’s vert competition, mainstream exposure for the growing sport is reaching a serious low point.
The cancellation of major events have been a serious disappointment to the girls and women who skate, but it certainly hasn’t slowed them down. That’s why I was super excited to hear about Julian Bleecker’s photo book project, Hello, Skater Girl, which showcases the inspiring skill and unflappable passion that so many women have for skateboarding.
In Julian’s words, “‘Hello, Skater Girl’ is a photo book that captures the spirit, determination and playfulness of girls skateboarding over a year in 2011. It mixes image, illustration and text to document the lives of several skaters doing what they love to do: skate — at competitions, alone and together at parks, backyard pools and favorite skate spots.”
Julian has made two prototypes of the book so far, but he’s looking for funding so he can print a limited edition release of the book. His photos feature some amazing skaters and the book could lend them some exposure to help make up for some of the serious blows the women’s skating world has been dealt in the past year. Your donation can earn you some sweet prints of amazing athletes that could make a great holiday gift for the skater girl in your life.
