A WTF Moment in Mississippi

The ONLY ABORTION CLINIC IN MISSISSIPPI could be shut down? I read about this yesterday and…I honestly didn’t know how to respond. There are so many things that are problematic about this, let me count the ways…

(1) There is only 1 abortion clinic in Mississippi! I repeat, there are ~1,526,057 women in Mississippi but only 1 clinic. Math has never bee my strong suit but my spidey sense is tingling and I’m pretty damn sure that 1 clinic can’t handle that kind of demand.

(2) Attempting to eliminate women’s access to abortion is illegal. Passing legislation that requires clinics to jump through medically unnecessary hoops so that they can keep their doors open is unconstitutional. I’m not even going to get into all the obstacles that women have to overcome just so that we can exercise our legal right to have complete control over our anatomy. People have been screaming about how “unconstitutional Obamacare is”, “How can the government make me buy something I don’t want?”, blah blah blah. [Side Note: I support the ideas behind the Affordable Healthcare Act and it really fuckin' bothers me when people call it Obamacare; because (a) Obama didn't write it, and (b) the only reason why that label exist is so that Obama-Haters, and vice versa, will pass judgement before even reading it. Back on topic.] If forcing someone to have healthcare that they don’t want is unconstitutional, then why isn’t denying access to healthcare unconstitutional? Our nation’s priorities are seriously distorted.

Oh yeah and…

(3) A politician that has openly proclaimed that he will shove his intolerant “moral” views down the throats of his constituents is reprehensible! Period.

Honestly the older I get the more naive I feel, because from a young age I totally bought into the “America is the land of the free and home of the brave” sentiment; with all my heart I believed people when they told me that the democratic system in America supports universal equality. Then, shit like this happens; I’ll admit that it’s incredibly discouraging but I refuse to let these jack asses (I’m talking to you Phil Bryant and all the blind sheep that follow you) steal my optimism. Creating change is grueling fucking work, it takes persistence, and it take diligence. Please take the time to contact your congressmen/women; tell them that this shit is unacceptable, tell then that as a citizen you are pissed off at certain political leaders *cough* GOP *cough* that are trampling all over the rights of women in this country, and that you will not stand for it.

I’ve signed the petition, I’ve written my letters, and I’ve called. Please do the same; everyone’s voice matters. Your opinion should be counted, let’s fuck some shit up!
