This is the kind of story that really grinds my gears. It’s a blatant disregard for Title IX, Its just plain sexism and guess what the irony is — it’s against a boy.
Keeling Pilaro was literally banned from a girls field hockey team because he was better than the rest of the girls. Keeling is in a freshman in High School in South Hampton who grew up in Ireland where Field Hockey is a unisex game (here in the U.S. it’s a girls’ game). Keeling is being banned from the team because, ”[Pilaro is] having a significant adverse effect on some of his opposing female players. The rules state he would be allowed to play if he wasn’t the dominant player,” Section 11 executive director Ed Cinelli told MyFoxNY.com.
The thing is that is advantage isn’t based on size or speed because Pilaro is 4 feet, 8 inches tall and 82 pounds, and many of the girls are taller and bigger than him. My problem with this is that if he is banned from playing the game, this could lead to all kinds of discrimination — imagine they kicked a girl of a team for being too good?
