A New Frontier in Anti-women Advertising…

P***Y can

So there I was, shopping at my local TESCOs with my friend Jess, toddling along the drinks aisle searching for the cheapest source of caffeine to get me through the hardships of university coursework and exams when SUDDENLY: A WILD MISOGYNIST ATTACKS!

Suddenly, staring me in the face among the Red Bull and Gatorade was a pretty white can cheekily named ‘P***y’. Assuming that a can bearing derogatory slurs for sexual body parts (and by far, the most recognisable, thanks to heteronormative porn) is too far even for advertisers, and possibly illegal, I pick up the can in disbelief.

My webcam didn’t really handle the white shiny background very well, so, for the purposes of analysis, see above.

Now, in this writers opinion, the entire concept behind this drink is just beyond.  This is a drink clearly marketed at teenage girls, and young women. The colour scheme and the pretty silver decorations make that incredibly obvious, as well as the ‘all natural’ ingredients, because of course patriarchal society think only women should care about what they drink and eat.

But what’s with the name? P***Y? It seems to be that the company is trying to catch attention in the crassest most disgusting way possible, through casual objectification of women – where would one see a product boldly entitled TESTICLES or DICK or COCK trying to convince men that drinking it would be hip and trendy? It’s clearly objectification being passed off as being ‘progressive’ and ‘sex-positive’.

And while one might think ‘Oh yes! They’re supporting the destruction of breast cancer!’ that’s clearly a sham – 5p per 80-odd pence a can? Really, the entire charade is merely to deflect the obvious backlash from both Christians (Oh my gawddd how can they try and market such things to our poor innocent virginal pure babies!) and us (What the actual fuck Tescos, PUSSY???), by saying ‘Hey we’re doing a good thing!’

It’s great to know that pussies are now being used to sell products via name as well as in music videos and all over advertisements!

    If it makes you feel any better, there was a product over here in the US in the 80′s/90′s called ‘The Wonder Boner’.

    It’s purpose? To de-bone fish after you catch them. But, you see the ad and you know that the advertiser deliberately picked that name because he knew everyone would associate it with a double-meaning and thus, remember the product. So… yeah, using crude/sexual ‘humor’ is nothing new, especially because… well, it draws attention, and attention is good for sales.

    I’ve never heard of p***y being a slur against women. It’s been more a slur against men. Granted the slur being associating the man with women’s attributes, which I suppose could be considered an indirect slur against women.

      The problem is the cultural associations with pussy, such as it being used in porn as a derogatory term like slut – and while I appreciate that one can be ‘reclaiming’ a word, like slutwalk does, let’s face it – this product is not reclaiming the word.
      Also there’s the problematic connotations of comparing women to cats, or using the term pussy as opposed to vagina because talking about vaginas is culturally frowned upon. It’s just all a bit problematic don’t you think?

      This product is not trying to reclaim the word pussy for feminist purposes, pretty sure. But yes, I do support slutwalk (Though TBH I support not using the word entirely)

    I think there is a huge difference because the Slutwalk did not exist just to use the word “slut” and march without any meaning attached to what they were doing. It was largely about women who are blamed for their rapes because of how they’re dressed. Sooo I think there is a wide gulf between that message and slapping the word “p***y on a can.

    It’s also the name of an incense blend I’ve seen sold.

    Honestly though, it sounds kind of appealing to me, white grape and lime flavor blend (even in concentrate) and a couple of those ingredients promote liver function

      It’s actually quite tasty xD (I wasn’t going to buy it and not drink it!) I might be iffy about using the term ‘pussy’ as a slogan, but I approve of the rest – like the natural ingredients etc.

    I’m not clear on how using a word can be objectifying women. There’s not even a picture of a woman or woman’s body part on the can.

    The title is arguably crass but personally I’m into reclaiming words and I hate how stuffed up society is about profanity and the like so I find the name kind of cute and funny. But I know that makes me a bad feminist.

      You honestly think the only way to objectify women is through images of them?
      Anyway, it’s not about being ‘stuffed’ up, tbh a large part of the problem to me is that you find stuff like ‘pussy’ used for advertising, and the first comment about boner products for fishing did lessen my indignation somewhat.
