The loss of sexual interest among menopausal women has clearly become no longer newsworthy in this time of falling stock prices and rising unemployment. Otherwise, why wasn’t it big news when the uptown vibrator store had to close down because of the recession?

Myla, a British lingerie, swimwear and sex-toy line, opened its shop doors just off Madison Avenue at 16 E. 69th St. in September 2004. This was very expensive real estate, and the shop was quite nicely done up. The New York Times did a big piece for the opening . Curious middle-aged women, after lunch at one of their favorite bistros in the neighborhood, came to air shop — to oooh and twitter — and then sneaked back later to buy the goods. A little sexual novelty was good for her and good for him. Long-term monogamous relationships often run low on libido, especially when the wife has reproduced twice and then flies into the frightening 40s. During the good times, there were trips and spa weekends with the girls; Prada bags and fashion openings; gala events, and summers often spent separated during the week. It was easier, then, for certain wives to initiate sex and work at the orgasm thing, and a vibrator often came in handy. Intimacy, for many of these relationships, was never part of the package, and hot, easy sex that lasts needs some of that elusive spice.

A soon to be published research article in the Academy of Management Journal examines the effect of race and gender on customer satisfaction surveys.

From the main author's (extremely informative) press release :

A research article set to appear in the flagship management journal, Academy of Management Journal, helps solve the puzzle of why women and minorities get paid 25 percent less than white men. The persistent wage gap is puzzling because managers should logically prefer to hire less costly women and minority workers, thereby driving up such workers’ wages. Although many assume that the wage gap persists because managers are biased in favor of white men, there is little research evidence supporting this hypothesis (managerial bias accounts for 1-2 percent of employee job performance ratings). The paper’s authors, who conducted their research from five North American business schools, found that customers are biased against women and minority employees, which means that managers have a significant financial incentive to pay women and minorities less.

Well, I think I have the presence of mind to tell when someone is being inappropriate, but sometimes when things happen that shouldn't, I like to make sure it isn't just me.

Long story short:

A tree fell on my house over the holidays. The insurance claim is in my name (hubby and I have different last names....radical, I know). My twenty-something insurance adjuster continues to return my phone calls by calling my husband. I leave him a message with my work and cell numbers and he responds by calling my husband and not me. This has happened 3 times so far. I even wondered if he was 'splitting' to try to get one of us to say something that would harm our case, but he was very professional at my home and things have gone smoothly for the most part.

Today my husband called to say the insurance guy had just called him in response to my message I left for him yesterday afternoon. I was instantly pissed. Not to mention that I had some other questions for him that my husband didn't know about since I'm the one with all the records in hand. Sadly, I could expect this more from an older man but from such a young guy it is more surprising.

I plan to complain about this when the matter is settled, but I did call him back today and left him a message stating I was curious about why he continues to call my husband in response to my messages.

What do you think?

Hi! We are two aspiring writers who have recently graduated from Algonquin College's Professional Writing program.

Not long ago, we noticed the lack of Ottawa youth- and young-adult-oriented publications that not only deal with culture, but also cover more serious issues like politics, the environment, social commentary, and human rights. We decided to start our own magazine addressing all of these issues with an entertaining, no-frills attitude.

In order to get financial backing for such a publication, we need to find out how many people in Ottawa would actually be interested. This is where you come in. We have created a short market research survey that you can fill out online in under 10 minutes. Please follow the link below to get started.

We realize that not everyone here is an Ottawa resident. Unfortunately, if you don't live in Ottawa or in the greater Ottawa Valley region, we will be unable to count your completed survey when we compile our data (even if you’re just trying to help us out). However, we do appreciate encouragement and support.

Please note also that the website where we created this survey doesn't allow more than one survey to be filled out per computer, so keep this in mind if you use a shared or public computer. If you have any issues with the survey, you can e-mail us at jamtingrenade@inbox.com .

Many thanks to everyone who takes the few minutes to do the survey!

These are rad:

Caption: Feminississimo (adj.,adv.) feminism - The theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. -ississimo - As in fortississimo (fff), a directive to perform a certain passage very, very loudly.

I thought I'd share, since the holidays are coming up and many of you may be looking to spread the feminist cheer with clever wordplay.

They can be purchased here. Enjoy!

Do you have a Feminist Bookstore you really love?  Or a cafe that's ideal for sipping coffee and planning a protest?  Maybe there's a great advocacy center in a town near you.  I'd love to find out where more pro-women public spaces are - so offer up your suggestions here!

I am particularly interested in places in the D.C. region, as I will be moving there in 2 short weeks and I'd really like to get to know the area.  But in the spirit of the community, I thought we could share some feminist haunts from all over!

So, where would you spend your free time?
