Stumbled upon the Disney wedding website, and this video stuck out for its infantilization of women and creepy daddy/daughter complex.
How would you respond to this question:
How do you explain the fact that men are dominated by women from birth and beyond that? Why do women brainwash men?

It is always nice when companies help us choose from the vast array of service providers available. By actively targeting the douchebag demographic, it aides in my decision of whether or not to utilize their services. Thus is the case with Earl Scheib Paint & Body.
There I was just watching Discovery Channel - sure, it's got all that crazy hard science about if you really can create a soda/mentos fountain, but it also has animals and stuff so girls can watch it too - when I saw this:
If you don't watch America's Best Dance Crew on MTV, you definitely should just for this amazing crew.
Vogue Evolution is a dance crew composed of gay men and one trans woman. And they can dance their asses off. I think it is so cool that this crew is getting so much attention and success on a mainstream show.
Check out their performance from last week here . It includes their background as well their awesome performance :)
I was browsing different websites today, as I typically do when I am bored, and I found a link to this little gem from a video game forum I frequent: One Regular, One Indian
I don't know why, but for some reason I was astounded by the ignorance of the two white girls here. I was also disgusted. Here's a few reasons.
1. I don't care what color you are, you do not get to decide what race or regional origin of another person. If a person tells you that they are Asian, then she is Asian. She is not African just because you think she looks African, ESPECIALLY if that reason is because she has dark skin. There's white people in Africa too genius, and yes, they were born there. Not all Asians have "pointy eyes" as you so cleverly put it. She's not Asian because she wants to be Asian, she's Asian because she's from a country in Asia! Oh, and being white doesn't make your other friend "regular."
2. There actually are people in this world, and in this country who don't believe in Jesus. Just because someone has different religious beliefs than you doesn't give you a right to tell them that they are wrong. There is no proof that Jesus was a real person that did all the supernatural things that the Bible tells us, it's called faith. You claim that you care about this girl and you don't want to see her burn in hell. I think I would have to disagree. You don't care about her, because if you did, you wouldn't tell her that you can't be friends because she doesn't love Jesus. It isn't her fault that she can't feel Jesus in her heart, it's not because she's not open enough, she has different beliefs and you should respect that she has different beliefs. If she chooses to believe in Krishna (who is not the Hindu name for Jesus, he's an entirely different person and actually predates Jesus by several hundred years) instead of Jesus that is her right.
3. One thing you are right about is that Saraa isn't a bad person. At least I'm assuming she's not, I don't know her after all. A person can be a good person and not be Christian, it isn't a requirement. What this boils down to is that you and your friend are the ones who are closed minded, insisting that Saraa is the one who needs to change. Frankly I don't understand how she could stand talking to you for that long without snapping, and I'm quite impressed with her patience. There's this thing called colonialism, and you're exhibiting it in this video. Western beliefs, cultures, people etc. are not automatically better or more correct than Eastern ones.
4. In conclusion, Hindu is not the only religion in India. There are Muslims, Buddhists and a few Christians there as well. India is in fact in Asia, not Africa. Look at a map. Not all Asians have pointy eyes. Religion is about faith, not fact. Christianity is not right and Hindu is not wrong.
Seriously, I don't want to play the racism card here, but it's REALLY hard not to. I'll just leave this blog at that.
Masters students from Royal College of Art's Industrial Design Engineering have evidently created a type of skin-safe conductive ink that when paired with floor pads and software can create a giant human-powered MIDI controller.
Of course the best way to show off technology like this is with women's bodies:

Silly me, I thought those symbols on their stomachs and the lines wrapped around their limbs were necessarily to complete the circuit. I'm not sure why tapping your feet and clapping your hands requires the rest of your body to be bare.

What if the government told you your family couldn't live together? That your father, or your son, or your boyfriend couldn't even come over to your house to visit? That if he did visit you, he would be arrested, prosecuted for trespassing, possibly incarcerated, and you could be evicted?
That's exactly what the city of Annapolis, MD, is telling its public housing residents.

The city's public housing authority maintains a list of people currently over 500 who are banned from being on or near public housing property. The housing authority claims that all of these people are a danger to the community, but the fact is many of them have never been convicted or even charged with a crime, while others committed minor offenses years ago and have long since served their time. Still, they can't get off the list.
Dalanda Moses is a young woman trying to juggle work, school, and being a new mother. Her boyfriend, James, wanted to be involved throughout her pregnancy and once their daughter, Mariah, was born, but was banned from entering Dalanda's family's home in public housing based on a juvenile drug charge for which he was never prosecuted. Appeals to the housing authority to allow James to be a part of their lives went unanswered, so Dalanda was forced to choose between raising her daughter without a father and moving out of her family's home, just when she needed their help the most.
Glenda Smith is raising her four-year-old great-grandson, Rico, and has to explain to him why his mother can't live with them she was arrested two years ago and is still banned, even though she has been released from the juvenile justice system and completed a rehabilitation program. Glenda asks,
Would you want someone coming to your home and telling you what to do, who can come in your house, how to raise your kids? This is their property, but the families, they don't own us.
These and other residents of public housing primarily low-income women of color are trying to raise families under already difficult conditions, which are made more difficult when the housing authority prevents their partners, children, and grandchildren from being involved in their family lives. The "tough-on-crime" policies that are ostensibly designed to improve life for the residents are having the opposite effect by criminalizing family life and tearing families apart.

Has someone seen this?
How awful. I can't even think of a way to respond except for 'wtf?'
I came across the following Turkish anti-violence video that I think is quite good.
Trigger Warning
The following video contains scenes of sexual harrassment and partner violence.
I don't know Turkish, but the following is a rough translation based on a free online translation website.
Hayat?n?zda bir gün bile kad?n olman?n ne dmek oldu?unu dü?ündünüz mü?
(Have you ever considered what it means to live a day of your life as a woman?)
En az?dan bugün dü?ünün!

Peki suçlu kim?
(So who are the criminals?)
Biz sadece bir ayna koyduk kar??n?za.

OK, I know that some people may think this is sexist because it kind of plays into that "women are psychotic when it's that time o' the month" thing. But really I think this makes fun of drug commercials and how we're supposed to manipulate ourselves with hormones and all that.
Plus, it's fucking hilarious. One of the better Saturday Night Live commercials made in recent years.
"Do not take if you plan to ever become pregnant, as it may turn your baby into a firemonster. In the days around your period, you may develop a leathery tail. May cause you to develop a second vagina."
I mean, I think it's up there with Oops! I Crapped My Pants ("because I'm wearing one, and I just did").
WTF is THIS???
Remember that ridiculous Burger King ad with the "whopper virgins"? I just found this reply on You Tube and felt like sharing with you guys.
Ok. They're trying to move on from the outlandishly offensive women are pieces of meat thing. No, now they have moved on to women want to fuck vegtables :
(Here's a link just in case it doesn't embed)
I am so glad they have moved on. Because what better way to move past using sex and women's bodies to promote vegetarinism than to...use sex and women's bodies to promote vegetarinism.
Apparently, PETA wanted to play this ad on NBC during the superbowl, but NBC nixed the ad because of it's highly sexual content.
But this new marketing campaign has barely even begun. PETA is gearing up for it's "Veggie Love " campaign. This vegetarianism=hot sex tactic has been used by PETA in Europe for a while now. Why not submit a campaign idea to them and suggest that they quit objectifying women?

So fucking weird. Do people think before they put out these things?
Basically single mothers have babies with multiple fathers to get all those privileges...
Props to Elizabeth Hasselbeck for asking "what about the fathers?"
(I searched for the transcript and couldn't find one)
Forgive me if this is a repeated post, but I have not noticed if anyone else has posted it.
The documentary about Milk, online and streaming for free. It is...very touching.
I'm posting this here because I'm interested in a feminist-driven discussion of Sarah Palin's interview for John Ziegler's Documentary, How Obama Got Elected.
If you've had too much of this already, please skip this post.
My motivation was the nastiness of comments on Jezebel, so please, no cheap shots.
If anybody has seen a transcript, could you post a link?
My initial thoughts:
- I agree with her that the rumors about Trig's parentage were/are ridiculous.
- I think (hope, actually) that her attitude towards New Media will be, at the very least, part of her downfall. (I may be biased as an anonymous blogger, but then again, I'm not publishing Palin story after Palin story.)
- Second point where I agree with Palin: she is naive. And surprisingly thin-skinned. And deluded. Is this a function of the people around her, or personal characteristics she's just always harbored?
- It's telling that the first publication she claimed to read was USA Today. I've never seen USA Today as a bastion of current thought. I've only read it when I've gotten it for free from hotels.
We of the feminist community know of the split between our sisters and brothers over the role of pornography and whether it does good or harm to women. I think there is another large debate is how much of our gender roles is defined by society, and how much by nature.
Every little thing in our society is seen as masculine or feminine. Boys play with blue guns, and girls with pink dolls. Finance is for men, and teaching for women. The type of lamp you buy. The shape of your car. The sex of a person is one of the first things that people notice about others. It is ever pervasive, and it can sneak into your understanding of yourself and other genders. The best defense if being aware of when it's occurring. On a recent interview, Obama started in on the gender norming.
Obama is just stepping up to the plate and letting us all down by reinforcing silly gender stereotypes. Through his future dog. He rejects the girly dog for favor of a rambunctious one. I get that as leader of one of the most powerful nations, you have to put forth a certain image of toughness. But toughness does not mean rejecting feminism. Active and rambunctious is not a masculine trait only appealing to men; nor is passive and cuddly feminine. Common, Obama, keep the good feminist vibe going. Don't fall into the "it's girly, eeeew" trap.
I'm not American, but the amount of news and information coming out of the current elections is almost overwhelming. I've found it interesting, so far, if baffling.
This video is done by a spoken-word arist Kelly Tsai, and speaks to the treatment of race during this election. Particularly interesting if you're looking at voices from women of color!
I'll try to update with a transcript as soon as I've got time!
Has anyone else seen this? As an Obama supporter, I am horrified at how people percieve him and what outcome might occur with his presidency. I just wanted to share - be prepared to feel sick to your stomach..
I Think this speaks for a lot of the issues women face regarding the double standard in relationships. But alarmingly there are a lot of comments about not understanding the video, and I think that that is a HUGE problem.
While searching through the Feministing archives for a blog I never did find, I cam across an old (circa 2005) post that mentioned a Disney film about menstruation. I simply HAD to find it, and low and behold YouTube came to the rescue:
Oh, where to start? The fact that sex is not mentioned once ("when a woman is going to have a baby..." ...by magic, apparently)? The need to keep a record of "past performance" (as if there are judges lurking somewhere)? The need to buck up and get over it? No vigorous dancing while menstruating? Beware the constipation?!?
What bothers me most is the message that you must take great pains to look your best (stand up straight! Powder your nose!) in order to overcome the horrors of menstruation. Gag.
Today is the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech.
Today, Barack Obama will accept the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Barack, the first half-white-half-black man to accept this nomination, and will be elected the first half-white-half-black President of the United States. Barack, whose life story is much like yours and mine, who has lived the American dream, will today make history and take one giant step toward making Dr. King's dream a reality.
This isn't just a breakthrough for Black Americans. This isn't just a breakthrough for racial minorities. It's a breakthrough for America. Whenever justice is done, it is a victory for all Americans. Whenever adversity is overcome, it is a victory for all Americans. No matter who you supported in the primary, no matter who you support in the election: when Barack Obama accepts the nomination tonight, it is a victory for all Americans. For you and for me.
Don't let hate come between us. Don't let the color of our skin make us less proud as Americans. We are all Americans. In the words of Barack, there is no white American and Black America, there is the United States of America.
Let us remember Dr. King today. Let us rejoice when his dream comes closer to being realized. I have a dream today! We have a victory today!!!
Hey, folks. This video's from a while back, but it still off-the-charts bizarre (and sexist): What the fuck are images of women in cages doing in Beyonce's music video for "Get Me Bodied"?
I'm confused. The whole video seems to showcase a classy, brassy-voiced B, with her sleek hair and bright red lips. And then, flickering only for a few seconds in this grainy, documentary-type sort of a way, are these images of women in cages. (Woman? I guess it's only one woman.) Slithering around in lingerie?
What, it's like the vid was too high on empowerment, so the producers had to toss in some stock footage of oppressed women in between scenes, in some sort of subconscious effort to not get people freaking out about the uppity wimmins? Otherwise, I'm seriously just left what-the-fucking.
