We of the feminist community know of the split between our sisters and brothers over the role of pornography and whether it does good or harm to women. I think there is another large debate is how much of our gender roles is defined by society, and how much by nature.
Every little thing in our society is seen as masculine or feminine. Boys play with blue guns, and girls with pink dolls. Finance is for men, and teaching for women. The type of lamp you buy. The shape of your car. The sex of a person is one of the first things that people notice about others. It is ever pervasive, and it can sneak into your understanding of yourself and other genders. The best defense if being aware of when it's occurring. On a recent interview, Obama started in on the gender norming.
Obama is just stepping up to the plate and letting us all down by reinforcing silly gender stereotypes. Through his future dog. He rejects the girly dog for favor of a rambunctious one. I get that as leader of one of the most powerful nations, you have to put forth a certain image of toughness. But toughness does not mean rejecting feminism. Active and rambunctious is not a masculine trait only appealing to men; nor is passive and cuddly feminine. Common, Obama, keep the good feminist vibe going. Don't fall into the "it's girly, eeeew" trap.
I'm not American, but the amount of news and information coming out of the current elections is almost overwhelming. I've found it interesting, so far, if baffling.
This video is done by a spoken-word arist Kelly Tsai, and speaks to the treatment of race during this election. Particularly interesting if you're looking at voices from women of color!
I'll try to update with a transcript as soon as I've got time!
Has anyone else seen this? As an Obama supporter, I am horrified at how people percieve him and what outcome might occur with his presidency. I just wanted to share - be prepared to feel sick to your stomach..
I Think this speaks for a lot of the issues women face regarding the double standard in relationships. But alarmingly there are a lot of comments about not understanding the video, and I think that that is a HUGE problem.
While searching through the Feministing archives for a blog I never did find, I cam across an old (circa 2005) post that mentioned a Disney film about menstruation. I simply HAD to find it, and low and behold YouTube came to the rescue:
Oh, where to start? The fact that sex is not mentioned once ("when a woman is going to have a baby..." ...by magic, apparently)? The need to keep a record of "past performance" (as if there are judges lurking somewhere)? The need to buck up and get over it? No vigorous dancing while menstruating? Beware the constipation?!?
What bothers me most is the message that you must take great pains to look your best (stand up straight! Powder your nose!) in order to overcome the horrors of menstruation. Gag.
Today is the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech.
Today, Barack Obama will accept the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Barack, the first half-white-half-black man to accept this nomination, and will be elected the first half-white-half-black President of the United States. Barack, whose life story is much like yours and mine, who has lived the American dream, will today make history and take one giant step toward making Dr. King's dream a reality.
This isn't just a breakthrough for Black Americans. This isn't just a breakthrough for racial minorities. It's a breakthrough for America. Whenever justice is done, it is a victory for all Americans. Whenever adversity is overcome, it is a victory for all Americans. No matter who you supported in the primary, no matter who you support in the election: when Barack Obama accepts the nomination tonight, it is a victory for all Americans. For you and for me.
Don't let hate come between us. Don't let the color of our skin make us less proud as Americans. We are all Americans. In the words of Barack, there is no white American and Black America, there is the United States of America.
Let us remember Dr. King today. Let us rejoice when his dream comes closer to being realized. I have a dream today! We have a victory today!!!
Hey, folks. This video's from a while back, but it still off-the-charts bizarre (and sexist): What the fuck are images of women in cages doing in Beyonce's music video for "Get Me Bodied"?
I'm confused. The whole video seems to showcase a classy, brassy-voiced B, with her sleek hair and bright red lips. And then, flickering only for a few seconds in this grainy, documentary-type sort of a way, are these images of women in cages. (Woman? I guess it's only one woman.) Slithering around in lingerie?
What, it's like the vid was too high on empowerment, so the producers had to toss in some stock footage of oppressed women in between scenes, in some sort of subconscious effort to not get people freaking out about the uppity wimmins? Otherwise, I'm seriously just left what-the-fucking.
